**WARNING** Soldering directly onto batteries can be dangerous, although not as dangerous as LiPo batteries, NiMh batteries may pose a danger when heated too much. It's best to use batteries with a spot welded lead out to solder onto. Overheating the battery may also cause a battery not to work properly.

If you do take the risk of soldering onto batteries, I have read that it's best to limit the solder contact time to the battery to about 3 seconds, using a slightly higher heat.

I was planning a making a second one as I have the extra parts to do so, So, I'm going to look into finding somewhere to spot weld the terminals to the batteries instead. If anyone has experience making permanent connections to batteries, I'd be happy for any advice.

You can make a homemade battery spot welder (uses a 12V battery to provide the amps needed) and there are Chinese tools sold specifically for battery spot welding and nothing else.
But I think a better idea is to use a lipo pack for better battery life and those already have wires you can solder to.
