Square Enix accidentally releases update for Final Fantasy IX that deletes the game entirely

header (5).jpg

It looks like someone over at Square Enix accidentally pushed out an update for the Steam version of Final Fantasy IX. What does this update do? Well, it deletes the game entirely, for anyone that was unfortunate enough to download the latest patch. SteamDB shows that an update for the game went out early on April 2nd that does nothing more than remove every asset and file from the game, rendering it unplayable. Presumably, a fix will be out imminently to undo this, and when that happens, you can expect an update within this news post.

What exactly is the basis for that statement?

In any case, I don't think you can easily compare software development practices from 23 years ago to how it is today, especially considering how relatively complex the game's development was at the time.
A lot of the information is anecdotal but what has been compiled over time paints a grim picture of Square's competence when it comes to preserving their source materials and their unwillingness to properly work with companies building ports for them.

Here is a thread containing a lot of that collected information:

Unpopular opinion:
Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core is the best Final Fantasy game.

The turn-based battle system in most Final Fantasy games takes way too long and it's just soooo boring.
I love the stories but the battle system is not fun and it makes me sleepy.

Plus the fact SE had to fix this by pushing out an older version of their software doesn't help the matters either, because it shows they don't keep backups of their source code, a reason why the original FF7 for Windows 9x was based on their Beta of the PSX release and not the full release.

I would push out the most recent version of the software that has the least bugs. Trying to rush something out would be far too dangerous. It sounds like you've never been responsible for pushing software to thousands of people before.

Lots of mans endeavors over the years has been lost to time. Whether that is TV, radio or software.
It is what it is.

idk why half the chat is people talking about how this game sucked anyway
it didn't tho
it was the last one before they descended into real-time bullshit
and the bullshit just got more concentrated until XIII
then XIV was so bad they literally had to trash the whole thing and rebuild it from the ground up

FF9 - The FF game that people actually liked, but are afraid to admit it. Though I will admit, some of the character designs in this one -- yeesh!

Personally I quite liked 12. Not played 15 yet. You can keep 10 and 10-2

I don't think I have ever seen someone have this as a guilty pleasure. Generally I find if you like PS1 era/style Final Fantasy then 9 will be up there, only 7 really likely to top it and that only "because of what it meant to me at the time".
Now 8 on the other hand. That I have had several "I know I should not like it but I do" appear over the years.

6 attempts more but misses.

Also I don't get your objection.
You say you all need religion.
I say Final Fantasy is one -- its flame wars have caused more death, destruction, hurt feelings, irrationality, unassailable scripture, lost friendships and international strife than any of the major world religions and their internal and external conflicts.
Which is to say both of us taking the piss the entire time.
I apologize. I thought you were taking my original comment seriously and lamenting about it.

But FFVI tops FFV. "Tries and misses". Haha.

I don't get the hate towards Final Fantasy IX. I thought it was one of the better games in the series.

XIII is 13.
13 is the piece of shit.
I haven't actually played much of the "classic" FFs yet, but I'll get around to it.
Put a bunch of emulators on my hacked N3DS, so I should be able to play 1-6. (I can't get PS1 games to play well to save my life, even though people say there's a way to get them to run well on a N3DS.)
