Emulator developer byuu demonstrates how DerKoun's HD Mode 7 SNES emulation works

Earlier this year, we saw the release of a fork of the bsnes emulator, which thanks to the efforts of DerKoun, allowed for HD upscaling of Mode 7 assets in Super Nintendo games. A few months later, the ability to emulate SNES games in widescreen would also be added, along with supersampling modes that could go up to 10x the original resolution. Eventually, byuu, developer of bsnes, decided to officially incorporate these additions into future builds of his emulator, with further betas of the bsnes-hd emulator offering slight bugfixes and improvements. For many, these phrases and ideas can be a little hard to understand, so byuu has decided to upload a YouTube video demonstrating the changes and improvements that the HD Mode 7 feature adds, while also explaining what some of these terms mean, and do for the end user. If you're interested, you can check out the 9-minute video, linked above.

In this video I demonstrate the recent HD mode 7 functionality in bsnes, which is courtesy of DerKoun. While explaining the origin of the feature and how it works, I demonstrate the effect in real-time in Pilotwings, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Dragon Quest III. I then walk through an explanation of how to use the various HD mode 7 settings present in bsnes.

Need a Epyc 7742 or Epyc 7H12 for this bitch. This is a CPU destroyer. But, it's absolutely incredible how much the different is in resolution.

You mean that a tweaked snes emulator is more demanding than a wii u emulator? Oo

I would think that Dolphin is more optimized than this particular effect as it stands now. I'm sure in a few months, maybe a year, it will be much less demanding. I dunno, I could be wrong though, but this is new stuff, and generally it improves with time.

This is phenominal. I prefer to use Emulators over Consoles just because these days the native resolutions of older consoles strains my eyes. (I'm getting old, 28 tomorrow...)

Anyway, I can't see this being incredibly demanding for modern hardware. I mean, PS1 recommended hardware is a joke by todays standards even for an entry level PC or Laptop. ePSXe's Recommended specs are only 1GHz processor and 512Mb of RAM :rofl2: SEE HERE

It probably takes a little more processing power for this application shown on bsnes, but I can't see you having to break the bank in order to get the feature working.

Bsnes/higan/whatever is an actual (low level) emulator that goes for accuracy first (which actually makes me very skeptical of upscaling, meaning less accuracy with respect to graphical output), Dolphin by default is an HLE which is more about "running GC/Wii software" than "replicating the system and its accessories" even though obviously it has to do some of the latter, but with more liberties taken

Dolphin is GC/Wii. Wii U is something like Cemu

@AncientBoi, Yeah, believe you can do PSP games as well. But a Pi5 is much powerful in comparison.

Not sure about other models of Pi4 but the Pi 4 B with 8GBs OCed to 2Ghz handles PSP really great except like 1 game I found and it is playable it just looks bad lol Motor Storm Arctic something or other.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Other games I can have turned up to like 2X and all kinds of enhancements, Motorstorm hmmm nope 1X and no enhancements lol

I will admit that one does seem more interesting than the usual Ambernic ones, and I already liked those.

    I dread the price point.

This looks like one of their premium models, so... $150 :glare:

  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    To me that seems reasonable.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I mean since basically all the games are errmmm free lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean yeah sure but the specs are the same as a $50 model, it's just those pesky "quality of life" things driving up the price, like an actually working speaker, or buttons that don't melt, and stuff like that.

I think all in my Pi 4 was well north of 200 bucks 150ish for the Pi 4 the case the fancy cooler, then like 70 for the 500GB MicroSD then like 70 for the Xbox controller. But honestly it's a nice set up I really enjoy and to me was worth every penny. (even bought more controllers for 2 or 4 player games.) hmmm have never played any 2 player games yet :(
  • Veho @ Veho:
Yeah that's what I hate about the RPi, it's supposedly $30 or something but it takes an additional $200 of accessories to actually turn it into a working something.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
yes that's the expensive part lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean sure it's flexible and stuff but so is uremum but it's fiddly.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Yeah a lot of it I consider a hobby, using Batocera I am constantly adjusting the collection adding and removing stuff, scraping the artwork. Haven't even started on some music for the theme... Also way down the road I am considering attempting to do a WiiFlow knock off lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I want everything served on a plate plz ktnx, "work" is too much work for me.
  • Veho @ Veho:
Hmm, with that in mind, maybe a complete out-the-box solution with all the games collected, pacthed and optimized for me would be worth $150
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Yeah it's all choice and that's a good thing :)
