Is it safe to update a game installed via .cia on cfw? Sorry for noob question. Couldn't find a current answer.

You will need to download the update from some other site (yarr) because Nintendo servers since 11.8 have AP that blocks update downloads from systems that don't have a genuine eshop ticket. This is true for the main game as well.

That's only true for eShop exclusives. Retail games have the update completely separate from the main game and you don't even need to own the game to download the updates.
