L4T Lakka Switch - now with audio and Vulkan

Lakka Switch, L4T edition
I am proud to finally release the L4T version of Lakka Switch!
New kernel, new logo, new drivers, audio... everything is fresh and clean.

Did I mention Rayman 3 was full speed on Dolphin? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

General system updates
  • New Linux kernel and underlying operating system, based on Linux4Tegra and Jetson Nano drivers
    • mainline kernel has been deprecated
    • system features should now be on par with the L4T Ubuntu distribution, except for dock support
    • Bluetooth was lost in the battle and needs some rest to come back stronger
  • aarch64 is now the default and mainly supported architecture
    • arm has been deprecated since L4T doesn't support it
  • New logo made with the help of jaames and the R:S community
New features and improvements
  • Audio now works through the internal speakers and headphones
  • The new GPU driver supports both Vulkan and OpenGL
  • RAM is now locked at full speed (1600Mhz), was 800MHz before
  • The system is now way more stable and should boot for everyone with a decent SD card (no more black screen of death)
  • RetroArch has been updated to add menu widgets (fancy onscreen notifications)
  • Overclock profiles have been updated :
    • Renamed all profiles
    • Added more overclock profiles
    • Added underclock profiles
New cores
  • mupen64plus-next (N64 emulator)
    • The core is full speed, even on aarch64 thanks to the new dynarec
    • Includes the updated version of the GlideN renderer
  • picodrive (various Sega consoles)
    • The core replaces Genesis Plus GX (Game Gear support has been dropped)
  • Beetle PSX HW (PSX emulator with OpenGL and Vulkan renderer)
    • The core performs worse than PCSX ReARMed for now, even with Vulkan
  • reicast (Dreamcast emulator)
    • The core is full speed on all commercial games, no visual glitches
    • The OIT renderer works (better accuracy), speed is still good on 1x resolution
    • The core needs the Dreamcast BIOS files to be placed in /lakka/storage/system/DC
    • WinCE games are currently not supported - there is a WinCE version of the reicast core in the works but the aarch64 dynarec is too slow for the games to be playable (for now)
  • Yaba Sanshiro (Saturn emulator)
    • The core is full speed on all commercial games
    • Yabause and Kronos were also added but both perform worse than Yaba Sanshiro
  • theodore (Thomson MO/TO emulator)
Updated cores
  • Dolphin : Vulkan support
    • With Vulkan, Dolphin runs decently - some games are playable, some are full speed... see for yourself, try it and experiment with different games and settings!
  • PCSX ReARMed : Switch optimizations and CHD support
  • PPSSPP : doesn't crash anymore when closing content
Removed cores
  • mupen64plus
  • parallel-n64
  • Genesis Plus GX
  • Ishiiruka
    • It might come back once the core is updated with the (beta) Vulkan renderer
Credits
  • Kernel and drivers work: NVIDIA, switchroot team (especially ByLaws and langerhans)
  • Lakka Switch work: natinusala and plaidman
  • RetroArch, original Lakka distribution: libretro team
  • mupen64plus-next: Gillou and m4xw
  • PCSX ReARMed: Switch optimizations by m4xw, CHD support by aliaspider
  • Dolphin core: aliaspider
  • reicast core: flyinghead

How does Mario galaxy work? Have they managed to map the pointer to the right analogue so you can pick up crystal bits?
Both SMG1 and SMG2 work pretty well control-wise, though I have remapped most of the controls to my liking. By default, yes the right stick controls the star pointer.

The real problem you're going to have is speed, with max OC enabled I average around 40-ish FPS which I wouldn't call exactly playable.

With all this convo about sleep mode, is their an easy way to change the colour of the background in LAKKA? Or do I need to load an external wallpaper(not that it's hard) :). Im guessing bright blue isn't the best for battery drainage.

The n64 game Conker's bad fur day doesn't run full speed for me with the dynarec. Why?

Its just the intro thats bad i think, get past that and the game is pretty much well from what i've seen. If you want the intro to run at full speed remove the frame buffer, it will make everything speed up to max but sadly the screen textures glitch in the top corner and the bottom borders, its good for getting through the start cutscene though. The Mupen64 plus compatibility page states it works best with frame buffer off and glide(Plugin)-which im guessing isn't incorporated into the current Lakka build.

I cant control anything with joycons, only touch works......
Make sure before you select the Lakka folder from Hekate CFW, attach your Joy-cons to your switch. Make sure they have battery, that should solve your problems, lakka works with joy cons attached.

So I decided to grab my save file from my favorite PSP game Final Fantasy Tactics and try to play it under this new version of Lakka. The thing is, no matter what I try I cannot get the rendering resolution to stick nor the texture scaling. If I set them and then try to resume or reset the game Lakka will close the current core forcing me to reload the game, but the settings didn't stick. If I pick to close the content the Switch freezes forcing me to hard reboot and after which the setting still won't stick.

I had been playing this game on my Android phone and I eventually did get it to stick, but had the same problem and don't remember what I did to get it to work as I had to close and restart RetroArch close to 50 times to get it to stick (while trying different combinations of things to try to get it to work).

I'd really like to resume my adventures on the Switch, but not unless I can increase the resolution and scaling. It seems to only effect this certain game as I can change these settings in another game and they work as intended.

Also, just tried to make a save state to bypass the intro while I test combinations of settings and the Switch locks up forcing a hard reboot. :/ Damnit, I really like this game.

Anyone else have this same problem and/or know how to fix it?

You could try editing the configuration file to change the settings you want before running the emulator? I don't know the details of the config used for that core, but the internets should be able to help you there.

Does anyone know where the core configuration options files save for individual games? I honestly cannot find them on my SD card for the life of me. Im figuring a bunch of settings I'm trying to save that optimise well with certain games, and despite the fact if I need to Remap controls it locates nice and easy to locate in a remapping folder, options configurations are a PITA to find. I was hoping to find the location to switch them between SD cards.

I'm on Fat32 and for some reason I'm just stuck on a black screen. I even redid the files to see if maybe I missed something and it's still the same. I left the system on for more than 5 minutes a couple of times and still nothing.

Did you use ChoiDujourNX to do your firmware? It is possible that you flashed the exfat firmware and not the Fat32 firmware. You may need to reformat sd card as exfat and run ChoiDujourNX to use fat32 firmware.

Without much information to go on, that would be my guess.

After you start a Rom, check in the options menu in the Core. You can see the name on the top which game are you currently playing in the core options settings. From there select from there to save the new configuration so that when you load your specific game it starts with the newly configured settings.

I think you have misunderstood me, I know how to save a core game file, the problem is that I can't find it on my SD card. I would like to be able move it to a different one, or back it up :P.

Ah yes, you need to open the lakka folder (Not bootloader folder) in your micro SD card from a computer or desktop similar to retroarch (Open Removable Disk), after you opened that folder, search for the Save state or Saved games folders inside of the lakka folders. After you have found them you can just copy and paste those folders somewhere else to have your Saved Back ups secured. After that just copy and paste the contents in the same section as what you had in your other MicroSD Card. Then just boot everything up.

I was on 7.0.1 and hit the nintendo update by mistake so now I'm on 8.0.1

  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
never had that i don't think
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)

    run h2testw on it
