not without stretching the image which is terrible. unlike n64 which can be hacked to be rendered at 16:9 without distortion.

it doesnt stretch if you keep aspect ratio, use filters to smoothen the textures.
I said, "not without stretching", meaning it does stretch (PS1).

There were ways to use hex editors to do it, I've messed with hex a few times but its too much to handle for me
oh that I don't know, but what you described is essentially modding the game.

to stretch the game all you need to do is to change aspect ratio in the core setting, then change aspect in retroarch's video setting to "use core aspect ratio"

if you configure properly it doesnt.

i completed a fair few PSX titles on my 60inch tv and it was not stretched, it was outputting at 16:10, keeping aspect ratio and using filters to make the textures look smooth.

Even GBA roms look nice, not stretched and pixelated.

There is a handful of games that actually support 16:9 on PS1, right out of the box. For example Bloody Roar 2 and Wipeout 3 have it in options.
