Catherine Classic launches on Steam today

header.jpg

After a fair bit of teasing, SEGA has finally released Atlus's cult puzzle-RPG Catherine onto Steam. To differentiate from Japan's upcoming Catherine: Full Body remake, the PC port is called Catherine Classic, and consists of the same game that released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2011. Featuring music from Persona series composer Shoji Meguro, and character design done by Shigenori Soejima, Catherine Classic is a game that puts you in the shoes of a man named Vincent, who must make his way through crumbling towers in his dreams in order to figure out the insanity that his life has taken on. Offering an unlocked framerate, and support for up to 4K, this marks Atlus's first foray into porting their games to the PC platform. You can buy it now for $19.99.

the problem is the remastered deluxe version that has a new freaking girl in it, releases February 14, 2019 and just a month shy of that date pc gets this garbo. a total skip for me
You DO realize this version of the game has close to 80 hours worth of gameplay, right? Just because you get an extra story branch in the new one, it doesn't mean this is a bad game...

Wot? Feb 14? In Japan yes, but we're not in Japan so no.
And 80 hours? I've beaten it in 8.

i remember buying this new and it came with a CD, and Pillow but that was when $100 were actually very limited bundles and not just cheap ways to scam people of extra money

There's hope for a Xenosaga port.

One of the worst popular games of all time. Among the most transphobic and sexist too.
True, overhyped as fuck, and I fell into it... I had big expectations god knows why, they were not met.

I don't remember about that, perhaps?
Perhaps I dropped it before that also, no idea... I dropped it at the beginning of stage 8 many years ago.

It is, but I've seen worse.

It's nice seeing this game get released on PC! Now if only another Atlus were to port a certain fighting game, with would be ultimate.
I don't think Atlas has rights to Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

Ba dum tss.

Edit: I didn't realize I was the third person to make this joke. Ope.

There is some strong transphobic shit later in the game. It's gross.

I think he's referring to Full Body, specifically Vincent's reaction to the new character. As far as I remember the original didn't have any transphobic stuff in it, let alone trans characters.

You could say this game indeed has sexist elements but on the other hand, honestly, if that offends you then I don't know what you were expecting. I mean, from the very premise:
The entire plot revolves around a succubus that seduces, torments and kills fellow men in their sleep, including the protagonist. That's literally what a succubus does in western folklore, so that alone should give you a picture. Still, Catherine's main victims are also betrayers, people who seduce woman only for their own pleasure and cheaters which alone should actually make it less sexist than other borderline/explicit games as the whole meaning of the nightmares is in a nutshell "either grow up, be loyal to your partner and treat her well or bugger off mate", but also if Vincent's decides to abandon his long-time girlfriend in favour of her, he will either be rejected or become a demon and rule over Hell... either way, not exactly what you'd consider a "happy ending".

Erica, a character at the bar the main character frequents, is, in fact, transexual.

With that being said, I don't see how someone in the game being shocked/regretting being in a relationship with a trans person makes the game transphobic. If anything, it would make the character transphobic - and even then, the regret comes from one characters unawareness of the fact. I saw the controversy surrounding Atlus using the character's "dead" name in the credits but uh....it's credits. And considering the characters gender itself is a plot point, it would make sense to include it.

Incorrect, though if you're not paying attention it's possible to miss Erika being trans. That said, I thought it was treated fairly respectfully in the original.

Catherine is also deliberately controversial. People seem to have a difficult time with that nowadays. If anything rattles someone the wrong way now, they'd rather crucifix it rather than just shrug it off. I digress.

Guess we should be thanking Sega actually. We know Atlus didn't do this cause they wanted to. :P

I seriously doubt that Sega forced them into anything, they've been established on Steam for some time though and that's likely why they were chosen as publisher. Maybe they'll publish the Persona games if they ever come to PC, too.

Sega is the parent company to Atlus. They practically own them. :ninja:

Oh I wasn't aware. That being the case, it's surprising that Persona hasn't hit PC sooner. :P
They was obtained by sega in 2013 and as of 2016, that all future titles in north america will be published as sega. It probably took so long since maybe most of their pc porting resources (people) was busy with other games. :P
