Finally we got a story going, took eternity.

I vote Charmander nickname Charzilla

You reach out your hand towards Charmanders Pokéball. This is it. You're pinning all your hopes and dreams on this little guy. He's gonna be your partner, and you his. You toss the ball into the sky. Like diamonds and stars, the ball flashes brightly, nearly blinding you. As you open your eyes, the light dies down. There he is. The small bipedal lizard attaches itself to your knee. You try to think of a good name, but you can't decide. You decide to call him Charmander for now, and name him later.

Blue swaggers up to the table and grabs Squirtle. The two of you meet eyes and you immediately understand each other.
It's time to d-d-d-du-d-d-duel! fight. With Pokémon.

If you're not mistaken, Charmander currently knows growl and scratch. Not the best move set, but you can work with it. Time to think.

Blue's eyes twitched.

"Screw this, I'm gonna make my Pokémon the toughest in the region! Next time we see each other, you're not gonna win! Smell ya later!"

Blue dashed ahead of you.

You rolled your eyes and followed him. After a minutes walk, you arrive at the entrance to Route 1.

Walk straight through Route 1, battling any Pokemon that appears so that Charmander can gain some exp.

I would say gain 1 or 2 levels on Route 1 before continuing.

Grew to level 10 before ever reaching the Viridian Pokémart, then deliver the Parcel to Oak, thus making you quite OP for your early adventure.
Believe me, you will need it.

I would leave the training to Viridian Forest. Metapod's are easy kills. Brocks rock types will be tough for the Flamin' Salamander.

So far it has been identical to the actual gameplay, but in a narrative perspective.
