Nintendo 3DS is the most widely used music player in Japan by elementary schoolers

A Japanese research firm, Mobil Marketing Data Labo, has published a report on console usage between different age groups.
Turns out, the 3DS is the most used music player by elementary schoolers. About 66% of them own a 3DS and they listen to more music than age groups older than them.

What age range does this encompass? I will go with 5-11 for now.

Thinking back it would have been a walkman or a portable radio when I were a lad (CD players would not come in and get to prices mere mortals could achieve for a few more years). Both readily affordable devices on par with a 3ds. That said I don't think I ever saw anybody with such things on the playground. Any number with gameboys (at least when they weren't banned) or other toys but no music or radio. Even a few years later in high school it was not shocking but certainly not common for people to have such things, though again any number of gameboys (and at least one ngage).

Scanning around when picking some kids up the other month it seems many had phones (mostly hand me down ones from their parents by the looks of things, still good stuff though).

I suppose I shall have to consider the implications of teaching/allowing kids that young to isolate themselves with music.

Honestly this isn't that shocking to me. I used to use my DS with M3 Real running Sakura as an MP3 player in high school. It was just more convenient to have one thing fit all of my needs in high school. I can see how a 3DS would be the same for an Elementary schooler.

I also forgot last time to consider the death of the $15 media player. I had some fairly nice ones at one point in time*. I have not looked recently but about a year and half ago I thought about getting one, or indeed several for that matter, there was nothing of any quality or even the quality I had back when.

*one was a 1 gig USB drive back when that was a reasonable amount of space (more than enough for MP3s which are 4 megs a hit at most for the average song), today I imagine it would be SD or just a large NAND chip. Had a slot for an AA cell, a little black and white screen for tag data, couple of buttons to handle controls, decent enough DAC. Because of the AA cell and case it was a bit fatter than the average USB drive but the average person would have been able to completely enclose it in their hand.

After my Cowon iAudio X5 (20GB) died. I used my PSP with remote to play music for some time, but those MS memory cost alot of money....
Then I use my smartphone's as music device

Nowadays it's "all" about the $7 MP3 player (street price - less if freeshipped from China): almost invariably an iPod Shuffle 2G imitation, available with or without tiny display (smaller than most mid 2000s flashdrive-with-headphone-socket), microSD(HC) only, MP3 only, miniUSB, 55 mAh 3-4 hour battery with no current limiting at all, single 16-pin chip for all inputs, controls, and buttons!

And it still manages to be loud and clear!! (with some pair of Apple earphones: I haven't dared try the bundled ones yet, which are an imitation of the early 2000s iPod ones)

Nowadays it is all about Spotify/Apple music and another to stream music, I don't use that. I use Google Music to upload my music and then I can play it on my pc, tablet and phone.
Also making playlist is very easy, but Youtube music is released some time ago, this will be the end of Google Music.

90% of my friends and family are using spotify/apple music, but I don't like to pay every month 13 euro and on spotify I can't find all the music what I want.
I like streaming off my music, only if is under my controll. So that why I use Google Music to upload my music collection. I don't have data limits at home and on my phone I have 2GB limit, and at home new songs are downloaded on my tablet/phone. If Google muisc stops, then I will look for another cheap options.

I will have to look into this. I am one of those luddites that does not have a phone so that is/was out as an option. Said years ago I was watching over things when stuff like https://www.rockbox.org/ was rising up and decided I did not need that, just something to hold some content and do random play for when in bed or just relaxing on a sofa (I can't walk with headphones and don't do much better when otherwise moving) so did just fine with the flash drive model. A couple of years back when I went looking it was all absolutely awful build quality junk with a digital analogue converter that would have made an original gameboy ashamed. While it would have been nice I did not expect to find the slightly uprated thumbdrive approach for $3 but I did expect to find something.

I agree. The headphones shouldn't really isolate you from your environment. If so, I would recommend that young people do not use music + headphones to isolate themselves, but learn to deal with the environment THEN use headphones, and if so, for mere minutes a day.
