Hi everyone!

I need your help. I've got a few days to get some research data for a paper, and I need a lot of personal responses. It's a google questionnaire thingi, so if you could, please click the link and answer a few questions about why you post on GBATemp, if you have a minute. It'd really help me out.

some background info: As some of you may know, I'm working on my PhD. I'm currently working on a paper on argumentation/discussions in university online forums. For a few reasons, I'm asking you wonderful people a few questions on why you post on this forum. University forums rarely get debates or have interesting discussions, but since we got those on the temp, I figured it'd be a good idea to ask why you post willingly. Whether you never post or post loads every day, I want to hear from you. Really helping me out, you are.

If any of you would be willing to answer a few one-on-one questions, I'd really appreciate it too. Have to get qualitative and quantitative for my project.

Thanks everyone!

Would have liked this to be in a bit more prominent category, but didn't want to do wrong by anyone, so I figured off-topic would be okay.

Just filled it out. Gave my username as well, in case you want to ask any 1-on-1 questions.

Thanks everyone! I'm hoping to get even more responses, but this is a good start. I'm aiming for 50-100 responses, but that may a bit unrealistic.

If ya'll have any questions about any of this, or this kind of stuff, I'd be happy to answer them.

Filled it out just now. Had to conduct a survey over the past year and a half so I feel your pain. At least yours was relatively short

Wishing you all the best in your research paper

You're right, thanks, not sure how I forgot that one. I've added that, as well as "other", and allowed it so you can edit your responses.
I'm basing this off the U.S. Census since your from there. It's not perfect and there's debates if we should include individual categories under White, Black, Hispanic and so on, since they are all culturally different like Germans and Italians. But to make things easier just generalize, lol.

Aye, I agree. It's always a tricky thing when trying to put people into convenient little boxes. But you've got to start somewhere, I suppose, so you don't accidentally walk right over a group of people. I wonder what a good Census questionnaire would look like lol.

Honestly, I don't expect to get enough answers to "race" to get any meaningful data. But it probably will be enough for me to say the research may be limited by those details :P

A good questionnaire will probably look complicated and annoying to fill out. Ya this assignment is more practice then anything meaningful.

If we were to a good U.S. questionnaire it'll look much different. White's and Asians get lumped together under there own 2 categories but there are cultural differences in the category, Koreans, Japanese and Chinese. The British are the largest ethnic subgroup in the U.S. 15% of the population, Germans are the 2nd largest 13%, and Blacks are the 3rd largest at 11%, at least looking at 1980's data when Black immigrants was lower. There are no minorities since there is no majority.

Even under ethnic communities there is no unity. Among the Irish there is "Lace Curtain Irish" and "Shanty Irish" that was used in 19th and 20th century. Even among Jews there's differences between "German Jews" and "East European Jews." This gets lost in ethnic categories that group all Whites, Asians, Blacks, and Hispanics under single categories as if they are all the same culturally, but they all had different Histories. It'll make the Census complicated if they tried to include all the different ethnics cultures.
