Well I first noticed the difference without comparing the consoles side-by-side. And I agree the original 3DS' screens are too blue, but my New 2DS XL's ones are really too yellow. Still, my New 3DS XL has more yellow than the Old one, but shows better quality nonetheless.

I wouldn't worry too much about White balance accuracy on a handheld console with a low budget screen. As long as the screen is an improvement over the older 3DS and looks more colorful thats all that matters. And a color accurate screen will probably look even yellower then your New 3DS XL, if your New 3DS XL is still on the Blueish side like mine is.

If you want to know what color accurate looks like I heard the Iphone's 7 and up are close to accurate. So if you have a Iphone 7, 8 or X then you'll have an idea what color accuracy is.

For my part it's a little weird.

I have an Old 3DS XL which is told to be a double TN by 3DSidentGUI, but the colors don't get washed or reverted when I look at a near-to-180 degrees angle.

But more strange, I also bought a few days ago a New 2DS XL. It's also a double TN, but the screen displays more yellow colors. Putting the two consoles side by side, the difference is really important. I thought it could have a problem, so I returned it to the shop but they compared to another model they had (brand new) and told me it was the same. Another vendor I shown the console too did notice the difference even without comparing the consoles side by side.

Today I bought a New 3DS XL (the New 2DS XL didn't satisfy me) and I have a double IPS panel, so of course the colors are better. But still, between two consoles who have a double TN panel, one is far better from the other...

Any idea of why this happens ?

(I don't post photos here because my camera is too bad to show the differences between the screens)
Nintendo doesn't strictly colour-calibrate the displays, so some units may have warmer colours than others. The same also applies to other consoles like the Switch.

Color Calibration doesn't really matter for Video Games since they don't have any color standards as far as I know.
And every developer just does what they want, so you wont have consistency and you'll never know what their original intent is.

I don't agree with that, there isn't a color calibration for each domain like video game or movies industry : the calibration is something objective that can be measured and so the "intent" as you say could be displayed if these consoles had screens with DeltaE < 3 for all colors and a color temp around 6600K.

I found a little trick to get better colors on some display panels : turning the Power Saving mode ON. The strange fact is that it grants better colors on some devices but simply look uglier on some others.

In the case of my New 2DS XL (which has a double TN panel that I find too yellow) it considerably improves the colors.

I got a metal grey New 3DS XL, is this an IPS or dual IPS or TN?

There's always a risk (even on a Wii), but as long as you read & follow instructions carefully, it's unlikely anything will happen.

I imported a USA version New 3DS XL (I am in UK), it is the Hyrule Edition version. It will only accept USA games (so I have to import my games also) and I can't buy any games from the Nintendo online shop, I think because my address associated with my payment card is UK and not USA, so I got an error message from the online shop if I remember right. But my console has the dual IPS screens and it is wonderful as a result, compared to the NN3DSXL's (2nd hand and new) that I tried in UK shops which all had the TN washed out screens. My console's serial number is QW1131193X X.

Regards,
AG

Dual IPS non-XL New 3DS here :D

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Also, just for the instance, since 2DSes only have a single screen for both the top and the bottom, how are single-IPS 2DSes possible? :P
