Taste :) People get a trill licking the game carts :)

For me, I like the physical aspect of owning a game, looks good on the shelf and for collecting purpose or giving/selling/trading. Digital format has to be secondary and as an option, big storage needs to be cheaper and internet speeds needs to be lightning fast.

i like physical games because usually you dont have to download some stupid update to play.
games with forced day one update wont be bought by me :P

dont need cheap ass developers / publishers that dont want to pay the fitting size cards. So they wont see my money.

Digital only is nice for the moment, but after the server are offline and you want to replay - bye bye money :P

you choosed a crippled physical release to say something about physical games, this releases are useless but they are very few most games dont need any download to work.

so i will tell you simple reasons why physical is superior to digital

1-Preservation in 10 years after the e shop closes or randomly if a game company goes bankrupt and their games get pulled from e shop, you can never buy that game again, once the x360 store and ps3 close lots and lots of digital games will be lost forever, if it had a physical copy you can always buy it on ebay or amazon to play.

2-Switch space saving- most physical games don't install much to the switch itself i got 23 physical games and my switch nand still has 23.4 gb free space.

3-No onlne requiered(except for those crap physical releases that no one should support) i never connected my switch online and i dont plan to, since i dont like to play games online and with physical games you can play all the games without having to go online to get them.

4-Cheaper games basically retailers make pre orders and promotions that make the games way cheaper than buying them full price on e shop, and used games even cheaper online on ebay and amazon, hell i would pay full price for games with more than 1 years on e shop.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Is this a limitation set by Nintendo or are developers able to put all their game content on the card?
That I wonder?
nintendo has 32gb cards but developers say they are expensive and cut their margins significantly so they prefer to release half game and ask you to download the other half, its developers fault for wanting a bigger margin, i never buy any half game download at all.

there is one game japan only that has the 32gb cartridge by nintendo in use dragon quest heroes 1+2, japan only but it uses the 32gb cartridges nintendo has, devs just dont want to get the margin cut really and sell you half of the game.

bigger sized carts are a bit more expensive and cheap ass developers / publishers dont want to pay those extra bucks. thats way they make a free "update" (cough... half the game in some cases) available on eshop. its quite a bad move of them but well..... everyone wants to pay as little as possible it seems :x

edit: got ninjad xD

1. Digital distribution means mir profit per game for the company because of no packaging costs and percentage for Retail stores.
2. Total control over the price. Only cheap when they want it. Think about it how often Walmart & Co sell unused games to a great discount because they just want to get rid of the stock

Physical games are ideal for collectors and people who never plan on selling their games. Digital downloads are only available as long as the download servers are running and after that, data loss means goodbye to your game forever. Meanwhile physical games will always stay on your shelf, and replacements are available in the second-hand market should something ever happen to it.

Which is why it's total BS that physical games release with required downloads these days. It wastes tons of storage space for content that should be on the disc/cartridge and comes with all the cons of a digital download. You'll have a game on the shelf that you can't even play anymore if you lose that data. Screw that.

There'll be no merit to collecting those games as soon as ten years from now.

The microSD storage solution for Switch is too expensive and limited in capacity for me to even consider using it for anything other than games that are exclusive to eShop, and preferably smaller indie types at that. This nonsense of including only part of the game on the physical cart such as with LA Noire and the Mega Man Legacy Collections is just another lost sale from me.

The major benefits for physical releases have been eroded because some developers don't care if they put out a game that doesn't work and requires an update that is the game.

They still do it because for christmas and birthdays it's nice to have something to wrap/unwrap & some people buy them for themselves anyway to look good on a shelf.

Another one of those threads?

And by those threads I mean, your usual lazy customer/PR agency shill posing as customer, asking peers "why owning something at all" has any worth...

Then about 80% of responses are entirely uninformed, but you still get an average of about one sensible posting per page, so thats great...

Lets react to this a little more proactively - why don't we..

People have to stop posting the "why is lazy bad?" selfhelp postings, when they encourage to ruin the entire ecosystem in favor of peer approval for them being lazy. If we could get people out of schools, who have ANY idea, what the difference between owning and loaning a thing is, that would be swell as well. Oh, one can still be dreaming.

FIRST

Reselling something you own, isn't a "graymarket". *inserttheworstcursewordyoucanthinkof* I dont care how moronic the followup statement of *crybaby* I dont event get half of the original price back is - NEVER supplement your laziness of not wanting to participate in a market with you not being allowed to participate in a market. The market is still there, it is legal, you are just too lazy and completely uneducated - and unwilling to participate.

SECOND

You can shelf your *crybaby* - "I only get half of my money back, when reselling" attitude, because the first price you paid is dictated by a "timed monopoly" of the good - while the second price (resell value), is the first price set by a REAL market.

THIRD

For every dollar difference between the RSP and the resell value the one who is buying from you, gets their good cheaper. This is THE ONLY price pressure, any game publisher EVER sees in their entire life. Much less in the "fake competition period" of the "first two months" when 90% of all game sales are made.

FOURTH

Every dollar *crybaby* seller of a game he owns gets less, used game buyer profits from. Meaning this does enlarge the overall userbase. Brings more people into the hobby.

FIFTH

The actual properties of both the physical and digital good are DESIGNED. So listing them and pitching good and bad against each other is entirely meaningless, apart from the points "has to be inserted to start game" and, "rights to the game are linked to the physical copy" is concerned - and even that could be designed around, but the industry interest isn't there.

SIXTH

Because of that simple logic game - where a publisher decides about every single property of their product its not "technical advancements" we are up against, to get our "wishfull thinking lazy future", its entirely peoples willingness to not own ANYTHING, give up the used games market, give up the game preservation scenes, give up the only free market price for games, and do that for NOTHING IN RETURN AT ALL. Because he also pays for the distribution (internet), and does so at the same price point, because...

SEVENTH

The RIGGED UP, FIXXED PRICE of a AAA game at release, is ONLY set against "what people are willing to pay max" and not at all against actual production, or distriution costs, or sales margins. Otherwise, digital only copys would INSTANTLY have to cost less then a third of their actual price.

So think LONG AND HARD about what you are actually demanding, when you are trying to shift an already brainwashed opinion (graymarket? GREY market?) onto your fellow lazy folks.

Because we see those models, already currently out there - you, as the typically lazy, uninformed millenial, lose NOTHING. Except "being among the elite, that wants to pay premium made up pricing on release day". Uh, exclusive. Does thiz come with day one dlc?

Here they are.

Poor people buy our subscription services. Get some free games, publisher picked, for your fees - and for the rest of the time pay retail pricing for digital releases -- that now never fall in price again - because, hey - digital shelfspace is limitless, and there is no price pressure.

The six (?) remaining publishers already colluded on the retail price, now give them everything they need to be able to do this in perpetuity.

But, but, but Steam?

Steam also exists in a world were retail releases are still a thing...
Also the PC is an open ecosystem (can install from GOG, or ...) consoles are not.

Everyone thinking, that the digital first world, where no one is owning games anymore (netflix model, you are buying usage rights), is something to look forward to - and only limited by technical advances - is an utter *insertyourownwordagain*.

Microsoft wanted to shift to that model with the launch of the Xbox One, WE THE PEOPLE prevented that, because of the reasons above, and because Sony didn't go with MS proposal at the time.

If you as a millennial with a 60% likelyhood of you not being able to differentiate between advertising and news, still want to dream of a world without markets, without ownership rights, and where you lazy ass never has to pay for people running physical world stores again - have the decency to do it with less glee - and without proposing, that reselling goods, really is a "greymarket" - when it isnt.

Thank you ever so much.

Love and care,

n.

no digital content will ensure the game to be intact the last time you played it. Sure digital games feature updates, but let's remember that digital and physical games share the same codebase (for the game), NOT the environment (such as SD access, etc). That allows a game to be update-able, and to deploy the same update between these. And by the time you get the physical game the updates are on top of it.

I did lost a launch 3DS years ago, and I remember being ambassador, and got my saves when I got another 3DS right away because I had these in cartridges. But ninty said the ambassador titles were lost.

For me it's not a nostalgia factor. A physical game ensures the game to be 100% playable when you bought it. Also remember GBA Games did feature different versions (such as Pokemon Sapphire 1.0 vs Pokemon Sapphire 1.1). So if a game breaking bug exists, then game companies could just apply the patch in carts.

I can see digital content a powerful ally when it comes down to cloud accounts shared between devices, but only if the services allow to retain your valuable data and allows you to migrate to other devices if the current device is faulty.

I use game carts to save storage cause I need to buy a new microSD still. I plan to get future games digitally though, its more convenient.

I will never buy digital games unless if it was offered at a discounted rate. I can understand the convenience having multiple games stored in the system and not having to go to the store to pick it up but I get all my games shipped from amazon. Plus prime members get 20% off pre-ordered games so it's more of an incentive for me to buy physical and in turn I can basically sell the game close to break even.
