So, a while back ago I had modded my vWii, and I got USB LOADER GX. For some reason USB Loader GX is constantly having problems at the "Waiting for HDD" Screen. It either crashes after a second or two when counting down, or it does not recognize the hard drive and moves onto the game library, but with no games, it also says "no storage device detected". The only work around I know of is to plug in the HDD while it is counting down, but I wanted to come here to hear any possible solutions.

I have:
  1. A 1TB WD My Passport Hard Drive (FAT32)
  2. A Y-Cable (So it cannot be that)

You don't need to do it while it's counting down, the problem you're encountering is happening when you're going to the Wii side - the Wii U powers down and turns back on and messes with what is connected in the USB at the time.

I know this isn't a "solution", I just wanted to go into a little more detail where the problem is exactly happening - I looked around quite a bit for a solution and did not find it nor did I get a solution from anyone (there could be one, and hopefully a solution pops up)

My solution for you, is to install the latest version of WiiFlow and use this app instead of Usb Loader Gx. I´ve had you´re same problem with my 1TB HDD and Y-cable too, but with WiiFlow i didn´t have more that kind of problems...

Did you try the HDD with another homebrew? (HBC, wiiflow, wiimc, nintendont, emulators)
if it doesn't work with IOS58, it's possible the device is not compatible, but if plugging the HDD while yo usee the countdown works it's usually fixed by using IOS58.

if HBC can init the drive, then try not using an SD card. it will force HBC to init the drive instead of the loader. don't use the forwarder to launch the loader, but HBC.

Then your device is not compatible.
try another one, if it doesn't work either, maybe it's not the device's fault but your console's.
So, I boot USB Loader GX and I took everything out. I had a Sandisk flash drive in the front portion of my Wii U for Wii U games, and my SD card. So, in order for USB loader gx to boot, I removed the Sandisk Flash drive, and then I took out the SD card then proceeded to go to the Wii menu, and then I put the SD card back in and booted USB Loader GX. Doing this, I do believed the HDD is compatible, but it runs into issues with the extra storage units, and also when I do this, USB Loader GX has this issue of not displaying the amount of free space properly. In the end, I appreciate your help Cyan!!

if you have more than one drive, it should work. you don't need to remove the SD card.
I think your problem is because it's a flash drive instead of HDD.
the loader tries to init the flash first, and fails. you know, even nintendo don't recommend flash for wiiu.

Now, I have this error, where it does not properly estimate amount of space. Why does it do this? It says there is more space available than the actual HDD.

please, don't do that.
your problem is irrelevant to the suggestion, don't try to fix something by doing randomly dangerous things which are NOT related to HDD compatibility.

cIOS 236 is useless and never used by the console or even homebrew.
IOS80 is already present, don't try to reinstall it, you'll do more harm than good (because, where would you find it? you'll install a bad version found on suspicious websites?)

that's great to want to help other users and make suggestions, but please understand what is their purpose first.
you probably wanted to suggest to "patch IOS 80", so even your help is half good. you forget words, that would have not helped to get the result you expected.

Patching IOS80 is useful ONLY for pirated wiiware installed on the official SD menu. it has nothing to do with HDD initialization process.

I don't know.
is your partition bigger than 2TB? then it's probably a 32bit calculation issue.
it's not very important, unless you try to install a game (dump a disc to hdd) while you have less than required space.

Now that I have learned the issues, that being of the hardrive, I have a dilemma. The flash drive I use for the Wii U is for storage. Can I still use it? Or will I have to switch? I really would like to freely switch to USB Loader Gx without always switching. Is there anyway to do this, if not oh well. Regardless, you have been a massive help.

EDIT: You mentioned the partition bit, no the HDD is only 1 TB, and has a partition less than 2 TB.

ah, it's less than 2TB?
then I don't know what's wrong.

the partition size is calculated using the information in the partition header.
Partition table (sector0) has up to 4 primary partition, each pointing to the start of a partition. The first sector of each partition usually contains information on its format (cluster size, number of cluster per sector (or sector per cluster), how many sectors, etc.)
Maybe it's read incorrectly, OR there's a wrong value in that location. But to know that, we would need HDD raw data and look how the loader read it, and compare manually.

I have to add a raw sector dump code to the loader, but I don't know when I'll do it.

Is there still a way I can use the USB stick along with the HDD? I use the USB stick for storage on the Wii U.

Also, here are the images of the glitch I was speaking about. I apologize for the poor picture quality, but hopefully this gets us somewhere.

Also, Thank you so much for your help!

hmm, it looks more like a memory corruption with random text.
when it happens, the same letter is bugged/replaced all over the loader, in all menus.
but when it happens, it's usually not safe to use the loader, memory leak could have bad effect, up to corruption of the partitions and file loss.

at the same time, the size being this big looks a lot like a 32/64bit issue.

if you want to use the flash at the same time, I guess :
1. use IOS58 in the loader
2. don't plug any drive, and launch the loader
3. plug the flash while you see the countdown so it's detected at that time
4. unfortunately, it might skip the hdd :/

no, I think you best just drop use of flash.

The flashdrive is for Wii U games only, and is completely separate from the vWii. I am just sick of unplugging it when wanting to run USB Loader GX.

So, how should I prevent the corruption? Should I worry? What would you recommend doing?

another solution is to NOT use IOS58, as cIOS mount hdd in increasing order.
plug hdd in port0 (first mounted port with a cIOS), and plug the flash on the front ports.

So, which do I use instead of IOS58? I also always had my HDD Plugged into slot 0 and my Flashdrive plugged into the front.

why do you have to ask? usbloaders work with cIOS.
use the slot where you installed a cIOS.

if the flash is the problem, fix the problem by not using a flash.
don't try to bypass, and do wrong thing and make complicated workaround just because you "don't want" to do what you have to.

you prefer doing complicated steps, instead of easy one, just because you want to keep a non working device?
please, just, please, stop.
use HDD, and stop trying to find solution for something which you shouldn't bother with.

really, everybody should STOP using flash drive, and asking for help and bothering every body else to find a solution for a problem which doesn't exist to begin with if you hack your console properly.
You don't want to do what you should and you expect things to work anyway, and your way? why?
don't be cheap, buy a HDD, or keep your problems if you like having them.
