Get a SX Pro, update and don't look back.

The SX Pro will allow running homebrew and backups when it's released (June 15th) and works on all firmware versions. Emunand will eventually die out like it did on the Wii/Wii U/3DS, as better hacking methods come along for the Switch.

Problem is I've yet to find a site that has them in stock, who knows when the next shipment will be in  I'm still on the fence with that, I can't be spending money on every little hack-related thing on Switch.

Well now with the fixed hakate and sx os you don’t have to be always on rcm mode

Yes. If you manage to make reasonable use of sleep mode in Hekate. But the risk lies when for some reason your device crashes and you're not aware of it for a long time.
I'd personally notify the author of the payload to maybe wirk on a fix.

I really think that past 3.0 devices should update. They have little to no support in terms of hacking and the much anticipated softmode has been canceled.
I think that's a decision that should be left to those on 3.0 and should properly weigh the benefits and risks of updating based on their own personal reasons. I've got a 3.0 Switch that's not going to update unless my 4.1 gets banned down the road.

No I'm not referring to 3.0 devices. Rather 3.1, 3.2 till 4.1.

Oh you mean 3.0.X firmwares updating to 4.1? I would agree but there are some holding out for that bounty for the partial ASLR coldboot up to 3.0.2

Man! I can understand if you got a device to spare but after seeing some of my faves at my local store I could no longer stay on 4.1. And I have the perfect excuse of having a second Switch on 3.0.0

Right, but I'm asking for opinions on why I should or shouldn't, mostly. Is there anything major that could win me over to the "wait till it's released" side?
There is more than enough info on gbatemp to make your own decision, no offense but we're not going to hold your hand on this matter

That's fair. Thankfully Nintendo hasn't yet released a game to make me update. The only one that will break me is Smash. I'm holding out for EmuNAND with Atmosphere but if Smash comes out first, EmuNAND can, if you'll excuse the language, kiss my ass.

Ok, so here's what I've been thinking on the subject.

I too have my Switch currently on 4.1.

I haven't done anything on it other than test RCM mode with a jig I bought, meaning it's completely clean.

I'm in this for a few specific homebrew and, ahem, backups. As such, here's what I've been thinking the best course of action for me would be: do all my homebrewing and backup loading on Atmosphere's EmuNAND (which wouldbe forever kept offline) and keep my SysNAND completely "clean", using it exclusively to play original online games I care about such as Pokémon and MHGU. Obviously we don't know if that wouldn't be detectable (or even if it's going to be possible to unlink the EmuNAND from the SysNAND, but I think that's the whole point of having an EmuNAND in first place, right?).

That would mean keeping my SysNAND updated and backing up saves / deleting my EmuNAND / creating a new one every time a system update came out (after all, going online to update my EmuNAND would make it detectable, rendering all of this pointless). It sounds like a lot of work, but it's the safest way I can think of pulling this off with a single console.

As for being tethered, it doesn't really bother me. I don't use my Switch as much of a portable anyway, so I'd rarely ever have to RCM it.

My other option would be just getting a new Switch for online and keeping my modded one offline forever, but that's not much different from a ban (other than the risk of an account ban, which would royally suck).

Does all of this sound too far-fetched or am I onto something here?

Did I say you had to?

GBAtemp is now GBAFacebook

Thank you so much for the helpful, contributory post, I should make threads more often just to piss you off.
