Hacking Discussion I no longer am going to be on 4.1.0, and here's why

So, given that Atmosphere works on all firmware up to 5.1.0, (minus the possibility of softmod solutions for anything about 4.x.x), I'm seriously debating updating to 5.1.0. As of now, there is no way to spoof the firmware, for one thing, and two, 4.x.x software solutions are currently private, meaning, there's a chance they will never be available on the public level, so you're forced to use the jig/rcm solution anyway. Second reason, and it's a big one, the emulator I play the most, Snes9x, is already working perfectly on my hacked Wii U. For my Playstation games, I have RetroArch with the Beetle PSX HW core to to that for me, in fact, it handles almost all of my emulation needs for anything complex like PS2, Dreamcast, Gamecube, etc. And the third reason, and it's one I keep forgetting, the console is only half mine to start with, my brother and I went halvsies when we bought it, as he physically paid me 150 for it. It doesn't feel right for me to risk modding it and bricking it and having to pay for another unit. Last reason, I forgot I ordered SF2 30th Collection on Amazon a long time ago, and I got the notification that it shipped and I tried to cancel it, but couldn't in time. So I can't play the game I bought unless I update to 5.1.0

So yes, combining the fact I already have all the emulation needs on my PC, Super NT, and hacked Wii U, there's nothing that I'm truly missing out on, and as you can see, I've thought this through very clearly. And no, this is something I won't regret, I've accepted the fact I may have to wait several years before anything for a viable software solution for atmosphere comes out for newer firmware. If not, oh well, I'm not bereft of anything I can't do emulation wise on other devices :P And no, I couldn't care less about "backup" loaders, only emulators.

Edit: Should I update or stay on 4.1.0?

This is the best decision
And atmosphere won't come any soon so i'm updating so i can play new games

I know Atmosphere will be usable on 5.x.x just fine, the caveat is that I have to use a jig until there's a software solution, and I don't plan on making or buying a jig at all since it's a hassle for me. I'm just wanting
to get this over with so I don't have to wait or hold out on games I want to play. My brother and I bought it, I figured we might as well use it to play games instead of waiting for who knows how long.

And the other thing about this thread, please people, don't call me out on this, or saying that "he's gonna regret it later" because I'm not, there's nothing I can do that I can't on other hacked devices, short of portability, so
please don't bother :P

As I read other threads about it. It's your Switch, do what you damn please with it. Update or not, it's not up to me, it's up to you.

Right, but I'm asking for opinions on why I should or shouldn't, mostly. Is there anything major that could win me over to the "wait till it's released" side?

I updated my Switch to 5.1.0 a week ago. Do not regret my decision. Updating my games and getting DLC after months feels so good. Checkpoint still works meaning I can continue to edit my saves to my heart's content. And I'm not lazy to put a jig in my Switch every time for atmosphere. So I'm not losing anything really.

Do what you feel like, i would not update because the games i play work in 1.4.1 , but if you dont fear to hardmod your switch, rebug team is creating a modchip that does the same that a dongle but is internal and automatic. 10-15$ is the expected price range

Thank you for this reply, and I can still mod my Switch to an extent even on the highest firmware so far. I was mostly just expressing my thoughts, but also weighing the pros and cons as well.

Not bad at all, I think.

I cannot tell you what to do, because I don't know your life.

I can tell you that I have not regretted updating my switch. I have a good jig, so I still have access to all the nice things, and I have all of the benefits of being on the latest update.

Given that I don't usually turn my switch completely off anyway, the inconvenience factor of being on the latest FW has not been a factor for me at all.

The only con I can think of is just no softmodding for instant CFW every time you boot.

But as long as I kept it on sleep (not fully powered down, but keep it in its dock to charge), the mod/homebrew still remains on the system, correct? In that case, I can look on eBay and buy a jig at any time, really.

Perhaps in the distant future, softmods will be on 5.x.x, but again, not a deal breaker for me.

Well a easy cheap modchip hardmod can do the same and work on every firmware. So is not everything loss to ppl that update, those people still have the modchip solution to have a automated way, whit autorcm+modchip

I'm not really fussed. I mean if it does release while I'm still on 5.x.x, then sure, I'll take advantage of it. But it's not a "Must have" for me.

This helps clear up the confusion I had, actually, thanks ^_^

Yeah, and that's fair enough, I feel good about deciding to update, besides, I preordered N. Sane Trilogy just now :P

Wasn't a coldboot impossible? But a warmboot option is?

Interesting, didn't know that

Basically is a internal dongle, it suck up power from the switch, detect rcm and inject payload sience is soldered to the usb port but internally,
Is basically a internal autodongle, and sience you can mix it whit autorcm you have both thing automated, rcm and injection, and sience is hardware based all work on every firmware

I kinda feel the same way.
Post 3.0 users are basically locked up not updating at this point since there is little to nothing setting them apart from 5.x users other than an unlikely software hack.

I just updated to the latest myself since I have a second Switch to boot on version 3.0
But I do think (since Atmosphere is being released and will support emunand) homebrew development would be faster if like it was happening on the latest fw. Maybe the backward compatibility is what is holding progress back.
Don't get me wrong on this. It's just a suggestion cause down the line everyone will be using the latest fw once Atmosphere launches.

I mean, unless I bought a 3.x.x console (which I really want to avoid), I've accepted that fact and it's okay. I may as well make the most of my Switch, no? :P
