PUBG dev takes Epic Games to court over Fortnite

IMG_8195.JPG

In September of 2017, Playerunknown Battlegrounds developer PUBG Corp, a subsidiary of Korean game company Bluehole, claimed that they were considering taking Fortnite dev Epic Games to court. PUBG Corp claims that Fortnite's Battle Royale mode copied too much from PUBG's own mode, ranging from the gameplay to the UI. They also state that PUBG Corp had been talking to Epic Games throughout PUBG's development, as it uses Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4, and that the company had taken their idea, and added it onto their already existing Fortnite game. Recently, a copyright claim was supposedly filed in Korea by Bluehole, and will go to the courts in Seoul.

This isn't the first time we've seen Bluehole go to court, either. In the Northern California district courts, PUBG Corp took NetEase to court over copyright concerns with a 155-page document describing how NetEase's mobile titles Rules of Survival and Knives Out battle royale games stole the concept from Playerunknown Battlegrounds. Bluehole also tried to claim they had the sole ability to use frying pans as weapons in video games. Fortnite is set to officially become available in Korea soon (published by NeoWiz) but this lawsuit might delay things.

The last time Epic Games was sued, it was by Silicon Knights, for the game Too Human; as Epic allegedly breaching their contract. The suit was dismissed, and Epic counter-sued Silicon Knights, forcing the company to permanently recall their game from sale and pay 4.45 million to Epic Games.

It's hilarious seeing these children here say stuff like "I hope they win, cause I don't like Fortnite" without understanding the ramifications of such a lawsuit being successful with the gaming world as a whole. JFC.

You should probably ask that a lawyer if you’re interested in specifics. My opinion is if someone blatantly copies someone else, then he should be appropriately punished.

If it worked that way, we'd have one fps, one platformer, one fighter etc. Game concepts can be cloned without consequences. Only assets, art, and trademarks are protected.

I don't think it's the shooters community, man. I've played shooters for years and it's fine, even funny at times.

From my experience I'd say the most toxic communities are

1 - MOBA ones, who take the games way too seriously and put so much drama into it.

2 - Sony fanboys who like to impose their taste in games onto everyone else, review bombing and flaming of anything that somehow threatens Sony in their eyes.

--

This case reminds me of Apple x Samsung, where the latter had the technology and the patents but got sued for design aspects of their product.

Apple ultimately won in court, but not so sure this applies to game design as newer games look more and more like amalgamations of others.
Ah,you see I wasn't talking about fanboys,I was talking about a type of game genre that happens to have a fanbase in them.I consider them cancerous due to the games buisness practices and not entirely its community, mabe the community sometimes but usually the company's dont care about them and they get greedy which is why you see microtransactions all over the place

To be fair, all fanboys are cancerous.I like how you just genralized one type of fanboy when its usually all of them.

I think both of them should close down, because they are very boring for me and don't keep my attention for very long.

Not sure if serious or....

Yeah, I get it. You're not old enough to get it and are stuck in the awkward, edgy phase of arrogant superiority brought on by "muh games are better even though I don't know good games". Pokémon hasn't been enjoyable since 2004, and Nintendo is consistently raping their fans with a smile. Battle royale mechanics have existed ever since arcade days. It's just popular to hate the games now because they're popular thanks to the exposure brought on by the internet. I don't even play these games, but I'd never hate them, especially when they bring exposure to video games in general.

Why is it "hating because it's popular"? Personally I think the games are terrible and are a mockery to competitive gaming. It's sad they're poking their RNG based heads into an arena that once revolved around pure skill.

That's fine. He's hating it because kids and his peers like it. I agree that the popularity of this genre is becoming obnoxious, but hating the games for that is just ignorant.

I really don't think you get it. I know good games, games I play are enjoyable to me, even if other people don't like the game. It seems to me like I can't have my own opinion about a game without being considered "not old enough to get it". I know games, I've known them since I was born. Sorry that I have an opinion, and sorry if my opinion is different than yours/the popular one. I'm entitled to it, and if I don't enjoy a game, I can say "hey, I don't like this game." Or do you think just because I'm 14 that it means I have no grasp on anything at all? If anything, most people playing these games are my age anyway. It seems to me that if someone criticizes something popular, everybody wants to rip their head off. but if someone criticizes something not as popular, it's like "ok I get it, you don't like it and that's fine." Again, let me apologize for having a personal opinion about something popular that differs from most other people's.
EDIT:

You almost made me laugh. At first I was wondering if you really didn't get my point, and now I know that you really have no idea what my point is. Now, let me spell it out for you AGAIN: I. HAVE. A. DIFFERENT. OPINION. Is it suddenly not allowed to have one? Sorry I don't like the game like I've stated at least 5 times before now. But it is what it is, and I'm not changing my mind. If anything, you're being ignorant because despite telling you several times, you STILL don't get the point.

Why would they be the ones? SNES Mario Kart was 1992 and "fun and wacky" racing games with weapons had been around for a while before then.

Okay I'm sorry, but isn't that....literally hating it because it's popular?
I’ll admit, you tripped my wording there, sorry. That’s kind of it, but that’s definitly not the only reason. Also, I really meant this: People can talk about stuff that’s popular. That’s fine. They can talk about it a lot. Ok too. But literally, this is the ONLY thing they talk about. And again: more reasons. See my first post in this thread.

It's your opinion and that's totally fine. The problem here and that you still cant get is that the reasons you described are... not to sound rude but, kind of childish.

You literally said you hate on it because kids arround you talk about it all day... it would be like if i say i hate the switch because everybody talks about it, which i dont. See? That's literally hating because something is just popular.

Want to give a constructive criticism? Or more objetive reasons on why you hate it? Maybe the gameplay is too fast paced for you? Dont like getting killed early in the game? You cant seem to improve at all? Building is too difficult?

See? Reasons like these ones are the ones you should give to someone when you hate on something, not the "butt kedz telkz bout it allz dayz and it getz meh crazy"

Well I'll take Overwatch as an example. I refuse to play it because on other forums, people go into completely un-related threads and start going on and on about it. Things like that will turn me off a game faster than anything.

At work one time I had a guy bug me every night about Left 4 dead.... haven't played any of it or the sequel to this day.

I don't hate the games or wish them gone... I just refuse to play.

FINALLY, someone tried to counter me with something valid. Yeah, I hate games where you spawn and then instantly die. And I also hate games with lots of microtransactions, these games seem pretty full of those. And yes, the gameplay seems a bit fast-paced, I’m not one to enjoy online multiplayer (unless maybe Mario Kart) games anyway. And to go back on the “because kids talk about it all the time” thing... that’s just a small reason. I have other valid reasons too.
