All versions that are available right now are hackable, but the hack is semi tethered, that means you need to connect them to a computer to send the exploit every time you cold reboot the system. (you also need to short two exposed pins, but this shouldn't be a big problem, you don't even need to open the console)

Firmware shouldn't matter for this, but some older firmware versions may provide a way to avoid shorting the pin (you still need to connect it to a PC). Even older firmware versions may perhaps some day allow to avoid needing to connect it to a PC, but that is still to be seen.

IMPORTANT PART: The hack available today is related to a hardware bug, they don't depend on firmware version. Your firmware shouldn't matter much, but Nintendo is preparing a hardware revision, rumored to be on the market in the following months without any notice or marketing. This revision is believed to fix the hardware bug, so you may want to avoid getting such a Switch (and as there might be no marketing or notice at all, that means you may want to get a Switch ASAP).

PS: Also, even though the hack and exploit is available, an end user can't do much with it right now (you can use Linux and some other things, but it's not meant for an end user). There is a custom firmware in development, that shall allow end users to launch homebrew and many other things. It may be released in the following months, and it may require you to use a 64GB+ microsd card on your Switch.

did i get this right, if i buy a switch firmware 5.0.0+ if have to buy a hardware "jailebreak" tool?
You don't really need to buy a "jailbreak tool", you can make it yourself, it is stupid simple as I will explain below.
Also, in previous firmware there would be the possibility to avoid this, but you STILL will require a PC to (and a USB-A to USB-C cable) to send the exploit to the Switch by USB.

The "jailbreak tool" consists just on shorting pin 10 and ground (e.g. pin 1) on the right joycon slot on the Switch.
This slot is clearly visible if you unplug the right joycon from the console.
You can just use a piece of cable to short it, it is in fact very easy.

Some people are selling really cheap "jigs" that make this even easier, that is just a piece of plastic with the appropriate shape that can go down the joycon rail and already includes the piece of cable to short pin 10 and pin 1 in the correct place. It is handy, but not really needed.

Now, the procedure to send the exploit is as follows:
  1. Shut down the console completely
  2. Short pin 10 and pin 1 on the right joycon slot (you usually have to disconnect the right joycon for this)
  3. Press and hold Volume+
  4. Turn on the console
  5. The screen should go black, you can now take away the piece of cable and release Volume-
  6. Connect the console via USB to a PC
  7. Run a some software on PC that sends the exploit
If you get a firmware below 5.0, you may skip steps 1-5, but you will need to do some other steps instead (as e.g. using Pegaswitch). You could also use this same method on consoles with lower firmware if you want, the method above works for all current consoles on any firmware version.

I will see if I find a picture of the slot with the pins you have to short, so you can grasp how easy this actually is.

EDIT:
Look in this thread you can see many "jailbreak tools" (jigs) that different users had made.
Take a look at this one:

It is that simple. Just a piece of cable (or a paperclip in this case).

Can anyone tell me after the switch is fully hacked, is it possible to use DS4 or XB1 controller with the switch without any external dongle?

I kind of guess it would be possible at some given time, and my rationale is based on how when Nintendo added support on the OS for several USB gamepads (including the GameCube adapter), the games supported it automatically without requiring an update on the game itself.

For wireless, I think its possible too. but i wonder if it require some external hardware to use wirelessly or it can be done via software. but i assume switch doesnt have blutooth support?

It does, hardware wise at least. The Linux builds that people are testing on the Switch all around the temps let you synchronize and use bluetooth mouses, keyboards and gamepads, even the Xbox One S gamepad.

The question is how "easy" would be to add that support and drivers to the custom firmware, and also patch the corresponding OS subroutines to present those devices the same as a Pro Controller for the games.

Yeah you have a point there, i think i'll just wait patiently since im busy with my studies for the next couple months anyway.

Just out of curiosity, why using screwdrivers which seems a lot more complex than building the Jig on 3d impression? From my research its really far easier and completely safe method.
For me I'm just using one Philips head screwdriver, and putting it in between pins 9 and 10. It's actually really easy, and you won't have to spend money on a jig

I can totally see that happen as they worked with the Raspberry Pi's Bluetooth. However only the new Xbox One controllers have Bluetooth.

Hi,

My first post here after about a year of reading the forums.

Could it be possible for me to use my pre purchased and not yet downloaded DLC for a certain game with a custom firmware? That would require e-shop access somehow I guess, maybe some kind of dual boot thing where I would have homebrews separated from the official FW. I have tried searching and googling with not much luck.

Those already included in the switch should be duplicated.
You should also be able to access eshop with the same account on CFW.
Since Nintendo is likely to detect CFW, you should gather information before accessing eshop.

Yup, that's the thing.

This is BOTW I'm talking about here. As I purchased the whole package in the beginning and have been waiting with 3.0 and only 1 DLC downloaded as I've been waiting for the HB and hacks to happen. I'm just being curious whether it is likely to happen that we can access the eshop with some sort of stealth in the CFW.

So, I bought a 126GB sd card in advance for CWF, but it is asking me for an update in order to use it, to make a long story short, will formaning it to fat32 have any bad or side effect on the reading/writing speeds for the switch?

Hi Ive heard that the paperclip maybe too harsh on the pins in the switch, considering they are on the switch mainboard if they snap we will be SOL?
I was thinking of making an alternate jig, by getting the slider assembly of the right joy con (soldering the pins on this assembly) and a replacement joy con shell. Seems I can do this at a total cost of $15-20
I have a Switch on 5.0.1 so this jig will be required for a while it seems..

Are we going to be able to enter RCM and download Linux ever? Or have we been forsaken
