Nintendo Financial Report, massive Switch profits, Shibata to step down, Odyssey hits 10m sales

Nintendo has put out a financial report of their company during an investors meeting, where multiple things were discussed and revealed. One of which being the shocking statement that Nintendo would be changing company presidents. Other big announcements were made, such as the fact that Nintendo of Europe president Satoru Shibata would be stepping down from NOE, and would be moving to the Japan branch as part of the company's board of directors. His replacement has not been named at this time.

Financially, Nintendo made massive profits this year, noting that the Nintendo Switch has sold over 17 million units as of March 2018, and maintaining that the Nintendo 3DS, though at the end of its lifespan, is still making strong sales thanks to the recent Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon titles. Super Mario Odyssey also reached 10.41 million sales, making it the number one selling game on the system. Total software sales for games on the Switch reached 63.51 million, while the 3DS sold 6.40 million systems, and total software was 35.51 million.

Other ventures proved successful as well. The Super Nintendo Classic also surpassed expectations, selling well in every region it released in, and now sits at 5.28 million sold. amiibo figure and card sales increased compared to 2016, as well.

In terms of the mobile market, Nintendo did massively well, with games like Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes, and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp all made large profits. Nintendo's earnings for mobile games was 39.3 billion yen, a 62% increase from last year.

The company's plans for the rest of 2018 and early 2019 are to continue focusing on releasing new games for the Switch, still supporting the 3DS as it has a large install base, and refining their mobile titles, as well as releasing more IPs for that market.

I think Furukawa knows that there is a lot on his shoulder
Many of us expect a lot from him
So, knowing he worked on switch commerce and that the switch is a big succes is already a plus for him

After seeing the shitshow the NES Classic turned out to be, shows you how shameless they are by telling people that the "SNES surpassed expectations"... Actually, just like everything they make...

I find it surprising the president would step down when things have pretty much never been better for Nintendo. Wonder what the mentality is there.

Didn't realize the SNES classic was a shitshow, I never had trouble finding one, in fact my local Walmart still has a couple on the shelf. Definitely didn't compare to trying to find the NES classic, that's for sure.

Surprised to see Nintendo posting any profits with all that piracy going on.....

Lol, piracy will not kill the momentum of a system's sales, just ask the DS or Wii.

You mean LABO isn't complete nonsense? :rofl2:

For the right demographic, I think LABO might be something incredibly important, and will likely sell well. Its the kind of game that may lead more kids down the path of becoming a game dev themselves. In some ways, LABO may be Nintendo's way of planting seeds now so that they can bloom into wonderful games possibly for their own systems years down the line. Just cuz as an adult it doesn't appeal to me, doesn't mean I don't see how important it may be as a product for Nintendo, I can definitely see it selling well, and at the end of the day, that is what will matter most to Nintendo right now.

Labo is a good idea. But the point is that it's still ninty being wacky and zany.

Complete nonsense by way of the fact that you would never expect such a game from literally any other developer.

This is the most reasonable and well thought out take I've heard on Labo so far. Well said. :D

No more RPGs from Paper Mario tho.
This came about when Tabata was saying Color Splash was an action-adventure game and not and RPG prior to release. It ended up being an RPG anyway, albeit with some pretty lite elements. I'd be more worried if it meant a return to something more like Super Paper Maro.

I'd take Super Paper Mario over the likes of Sticker Star or Color Splash, but I think we all want a return to the original/Thousand Year Door, and I don't understand why they no longer want to give that to us.

Nice idea. I would like to bet that any future devs who will come from the LABO, cough, cash cow, cough, don't come from the limited creative possibilities of LABO but more so from the exposure to a fun gaming platform that their otherwise well intentioned parents wouldn't have allowed them access to.

And just for clarity my earlier post was sarcastic. I guess it was my fault that it was misunderstood. Sarcasm is a bit lame....

I'm not saying that LABO will be the driving factor, but it will be the type of product that will open up the eyes of kids that had no interest in video games to begin with. I can see LABO being the type of thing that lands in some middle school tech ed classrooms and the like (we had flight simulators and bridge building software as part of our middle school tech ed class, so it would certainly fit right at home there), and thus, it isn't hard to see how a kid that never even owned a system or had any intention of purchasing a system, exposed to LABO might see both the wonder of video games and how interesting it may be to develop video games at the same time. And from there, they run home and get a Switch, and then they discover Breath of the Wild or something like that, and from there, that child's path in life has been altered because of LABO. Really isn't something hard to imagine at all.
