Here's a tweet from a few weeks back: https://mobile.twitter.com/Team17Ltd/status/884565760089214976?p=v
Responding to a fan, Team 17 tweeted that after they've released their planned Switch titles that they're open to the idea of putting a Worms game on the Nintendo Switch.

The titles being published by them this year include Overcooked(which has been released), Yooka Laylee (due sometime this year, supposedly in final tests), and the Escapist 2 (due August 22 for other systems with the Switch version to follow soon after).

I do hope it happens, and I think given Nintendo's history with Team 17, that it likely will. The Switch seems like the perfect home for a Worms game. Did you know that going back to the SNES, that every Nintendo system except for the Wii U and 3DS has received a worms game? SNES - Worms. GBC - Worms Armageddon, N64 - Worms Armageddon, GBA - Worms World Party, GC - Worms 3D, DS - Worms: Open Warfare and Worms: Open Warfare 2, Wii - Worms: A Space Oddity and Worms:Battle Islands.

While the series has been absent from Nintendo systems in recent years (seriously, why no 3DS Worms game?!), the overall history of the series on Nintendo systems coupled with the success of the Switch and a tweet like this makes me confident that we'll likely see a Worms game released for the Switch.

Worms lost its way for me some time after 2, though the ones after felt a bit like expansion packs so that was OK. Also I think we still don't talk about the first open warfare in polite company, granted probably not in the same way we don't talk about 3d but .

On why no 3ds game that was because the 3ds was bad and all the third parties could see it.

"success of the Switch"
Is that like the N64 was a success?

No thank you. I do not need another Worms 2 remake.
They seriously need to let go of Worms franchise and make something fresh :S

Worms is one of those games that bring friends together that doesn't end in violence. Everyone knows that Worms is all in good fun.

Agreed, worms games have definitely been generally pretty shit past the first couple, and erm well out of the fifth generation consoles: Atari Jaguar, 3DO, Sega Saturn, PlayStation and N64 I'd say yeah N64 was a success.

While I am not prepared to go to bat for them defending their actions I would have to stand up for worms being one of those things like tetris/columns/puyo puyo, bomberman and rampart that is timeless and every system could use a good version of, however also styles that can fairly easily be broken (see also most efforts for each of those, give or take columns and puyo puyo).

I haven't played a Worms game in a while, but they are fun. It would be fun to play it again with a fresh online community which hasn't been condensed to those diehards that are so difficult to beat.

Are we living in alternate realities? You claim the 3DS is considered bad with no 3rd party support, but the 3DS is continuing strong 6 years into its life with plans well into its 7th with a ton of 3rd party support. And you claim the Switch isn't a success or its success is akin to that of the N64, yet it had Nintendo's second strongest launch and is already selling at a quicker pace than the PS4 did in the same amount of time after its launch, and thats with limited Switch supply. It really sounds like you're either living in a different world, or just trolling. Whether you like Nintendo or not, they're doing pretty well right now, and that's just the truth to it all.

If in doubt I am always on a troll, that said like the best lies there is always an element of truth in it.

Equally you would rate the 3ds third party library and approach like you would the GBA and DS ones? Time and time again I did a "where are they now" thing when doing retrospectives of the GBA and DS libraries and time and time again all the devs that made the GBA and DS great had left the 3ds to do andrios.

If this is the switch doing well (already we are seeing a repeat of the no effort/less effort thing in third parties and the releases have gaps aplenty) I hate to see it doing badly, though actually I want to see it do badly so we can see Nintendo go third party and the world get slightly better for it.

I think you're choosing to equate success of a company not with its sales but rather your own perception of what you think the company should be doing. You can go that route I guess, but early on the Switch is by all accounts a financial success, and if you don't consider it so, then I guess that means that the PS4 in its first 4 to 5 months was also a failure given that it wasn't selling as well as the Switch was in that same amount of time (same would obviously apply to the Xbone which sold even worse than the PS4 in that time).

As to your 3DS point... I don't see your point. The 3DS continues to sell well and still has a lot of 3rd party support, especially for a device over 6 years old. A Worms game absolutely could and should come out for the system, even if it is just an eshop version. It would definitely sell well enough.

Like I said, hate on Nintendo if you want, you're absolutely free to do so, but you can't ignore the financial numbers, and right now everything is looking great for Nintendo in that regard.

Missed opportunity for thread title to say open a can of Worms. Anyways, I have fond memories of Worms games and I hope they go through with this.

I bet they will. They seem excited to even just be publishing games on the system. And given their relationship with Nintendo in the past and at the rate the Switch is selling, I'm sure they can see the great opportunity they have there.

I do tend to ignore financial numbers -- I like games, the relative wealth/income of some Japanese dudes is less of a concern for me and sales numbers don't keep me entertained on days where the sun keeps me inside. There is an element of personal selection when figuring out if a library is good or not*, however I try not to go too far from what could be said to be a general consensus.

*I have previously said other than Advance Wars and Starfy I am not really one for Nintendo first party/captive devs and had a whale of a time on the GBA and DS. The 3ds then came as a massive disappointment to me, especially as nothing else really rose to take its place.

Yes, you're viewing the success from an opinionated consumer's perspective and not the financial perspective. The Switch should be attractive to the likes of Team17 because of its strong sales and steady growth in sales, leading to more money for them should they release games on the system.

The fortunate thing about this early success for Nintendo from a financial standpoint means that more developers like Team17 will be compelled to create games for the system, and soon enough, the gamers like you that don't view the system as a success in terms of the current library available to you, will soon find yourself enjoying the library and perhaps might eventually be considered a success from your consumer library-focused point of view.

I do see what you mean about the GBA and DS, especially the GBA, it was like the wild frontier back then, before smartphones, the device was packed with tons of random-ass games made by bizarre developers no one ever heard of. And crazily enough, a lot of those games were great. But times changed, most those developers did indeed become smartphone app creators, and now there is a pressure to have better than 16-bit looking games which only increases development time. So I get why the 3DS 3rd party support isn't like what it was for Nintendo handhelds back then. But all the same, the 3DS does still have very strong 3rd party and indie support.

I am sure the latest COD sold millions, possibly millions more than many other games I enjoyed. Still likely to bore me to tears, however to some that sounds OK. I just apply the same logic to consoles.

A "it has no games so we will try for the people which made a mistake just trying to extract some value from the system" ploy you say. Not a bad choice for a dev that let the world pass them by somewhat.

I am not seeing the strong 3rd party and indy support for the 3ds, be it in numbers or results.

Err thats not what I'm saying. Most people do think the Switch has games already making the system worth getting. I think you're more in the minority in not seeing value in the current library. But I was saying that fortunately as the Switch continues to sell and more and more must have games join, more and more 3rd parties will continue to jump on board as well, and even those like you that don't see any of the games currently available to be great will get your fill of the types of games on the system that you will like.

As to how you're not seeing 3rd party or indie support on the 3DS.... just look at this list, the dang thing is loaded with 3rd party support, sort by developer, and scroll down and just watch as tons of different creators scroll by. Frankly I'm not sure why you're choosing to turn a blind eye to something so blatant, but whatever I guess: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nintendo_3DS_games

You can't really argue with 5 million sold units across a non holiday drought season though, whatever personal opinion is held.

And those with a Switch only need to look at the coming soon section to see the games multiplying month after month. Publishers are not going to ignore financials like that lightly.

Of course if someone doesn't like Nintendo inherently nothing will change their opinion on the consoles or games, they cater to a certain type of gamer that doesn't tend to be the lowest common denominator and that's totally fine by me, it's the reason I buy every console eventually.

I used to play Worms and I find this comment incredibly ridiculous. Worms Armageddon which I'd play online on PC was the perfect fit with keyboard due to rope racing and the other game modes so if you tried to play rope racing with a controller you wouldn't even be able to play the stages at all.

Worms' rope racing stages take a lot of precision and you can't get that with a controller.

For what it is worth, I find your comment on my comment incredibly ridiculous. I was giving my opinion that I think the Switch is the perfect home for a worms game, an opinion I stand by. Its great if you prefer to play the Worms games on PC, but that doesn't take away from the fact that I personally think that the Switch is a perfect system for Worms games, as these have been games that I've enjoyed both on the big screen and on the go. Plus Worms in general just kind of oozes that Nintendo charm (despite not being a first or second party game).

As for using the Ninja rope, I've never had much issue using it in console versions. So the whole PC superiority thing, especially for a game like Worms, is definitely going to be lost on me personally.
