Video Interview

Now, Game Freak co-founder Junichi Masuda has spoken about what the future holds for Pokémon, and how excited the team is – not only about Nintendo Switch, but in having the chance to release a Pokémon game on it.

“What I’m really curious about, and really excited to see, will be the main way that people play the Switch"

“Will it be home for the most part? Will it be out and about? I think that is really going to depend on where the person lives, maybe. Depending on the country, maybe the main style of playing will be different. As we’ve been saying a lot, we always focus on, when designing the games, thinking about how the player is going to play the game – how they’re going to enjoy it, and what kind of experiences they are going to have. I’m really just kind of excited to see where the main style of playing is going to land.”

The Pokémon series has transitioned between platforms before, perhaps, most significantly, between the single-screen Game Boy family of systems to the dual-screen Nintendo DS. But, with Nintendo Switch, that transition perhaps isn’t as straightforward.

“It’s definitely different this time,” Masuda acknowledged. “Just playing it at home is kind of a little bit different than the portable systems we’ve made games for up until now.”

Game Freak isn’t blind to the overwhelming reaction that the news at E3 2017 was met with, and are certainly listening to feedback from fans as to what they are hoping to see.

Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon director Shigeru Ohmori added: “It definitely is really fun to see that, but at the same time, it is definitely a lot of pressure, so we’re going to do our best to create a game that answers those expectations.”

Masuda didn’t hesitate to agree, admitting that he hoped expectations from fans weren’t set too high.

“Of course, it is very difficult to make the game, so I hope people don’t get their expectations up too high,” Masuda admitted. “We’ll do our best.”

From the Videos where they were viewing old comments about people wanting a Console Pokemon game someone said "All I ask is someone take the basic Pokemon premise of "Gotta catch them all" in a large Openish world Bam, Done" and they replied that they are making it so Open world Pokemon Confirmed??? it's just a theory... a ga-

I have to say, while a fully open world Pokemon game would be interesting, I kinda hope it's not. There's been way too many open world games lately, and I don't feel like Pokemon is supposed to be like that.
Still, really excited for Pokemon Switch

I agree. It just wouldn't feel right to walk around an open world and encountering pokemon. I like the classic style.

I like this, especially the sort of realistic take on the Switch, they seemingly are going to wait and see what the preferred method of playing it will be, presumably developing the game to favor that. At its heart, Pokemon games are for kids, I just see them doing the same formula, it being portable friendly, only expanding the graphics and possibly expanding the world. For instance, a long time dream game would be going through all the regions in one game. Or just some of them. Everything said is speculation really, but they sound like they will be prepared on what to make, and will adapt if necessary. I guess what the game can compare to is XD/Colosseum, but much much larger, those regions are pretty small.

Yeah, going through all of the regions would be a lot of fun, although I don't know if they would since that might make it so that VC Pokemon or newer games wouldn't sell as much. Still, with the possibility of making a much larger game, imagine how many new Pokemon they're gonna add though.
Will we finally pass one thousand Pokemon? Only time will tell

I actually don't think Pokemon should go open world but it should do a hybrid open world kind of like Xenoblade except smaller

I'm excited, though I always knew they never brought the main Pokemon games to consoles because of the series' name itself -- Pocket Monsters. It was always meant to be a handheld series that you take around with you, and it always emphasized interacting with others, whether through trading or local battling, or whatever local wireless gimmick was included in each new title. That said, I think the Switch is the perfect system for transitioning Pokemon to a home console, because it still enables local wireless play with other Switch owners, meaning local trading, battling, etc. will still be around. A home console Pokemon game would never have worked on Wii U or any previous system, but Switch is unique. I actually play Switch in handheld mode more than docked, so I think I can get over the initial hesitation of a "home console" Pokemon experience.

People are talking about open world, and I agree with the sentiment here that Pokemon should at the very least be wary before going open-world. Too many games are open-world nowadays for the heck of it, even if it doesn't fit the gameplay at all. At the end of the day, I'm trusting Game Freak with this one. If they just make a standard Pokemon experience with greatly updated visuals, I'll still be more than happy.

Very iffy on this, considering how lazy GF seems to have gotten within the last two generations especially.

- XY felt like it was meant to be this grand adventure with that fair amount of content between the first two gyms before just returning to next to nothing between them.
- They can barely keep two Pokemon models on screen at once with a stable 30FPS, even worse in double battles.
- While ORAS should have fixed the FPS problems, it did nothing to do that. Looked like a hack of XY while HGSS didn't look like hacks of DPPl
-SM was blatantly rushed with quite a few areas on that overhead map that are drawn with decent detail but aren't actually in the game. The Golf course is mapped a fair way back that you can't see without a walk through walls code. Plus the Elite Four member who looks like a golf player and is the only character you didn't meet during the main quest. Not to mention the FPS problems are laughably even worse now.
-They reveal USUM only a year after SM while other third versions asides Crystal were released two years after. It looks very much the same and they just released their pinnacle of laziness, a recolor of Middy Lycanroc.

To say my expectations from them are low is an understatement. But they're saying we shouldn't keep them too high?

I find it funny how the devs have been talking more about Pokemon Switch than USUM

Because it's merely a sequel, they're probably already done with it. Maybe it's meant as a quiet release, have those instead of DP remakes, which would've blown up the net almost as much as the Switch announcement. I don't know, I'll still buy it, they unveiled a Dusk form Lycanroc, a new Ash-hat Pikachu seemingly exclusive to USUM, the mascot legends have new forms, so there's an effort made with the games at least. Typically their follow-up titles in a generation do not sell as well. XY for example has sold more than ORAS, yeah there's a 1 year difference, but still.

I dont care about the open world thing really. AllI want is that we get a more complete game like HG/SS and less than S&M but with much better graphics. Also add a decent post game and different shiny hunting methods. c:

I always considered Pokemon main series games as well as XD & Colosseum to be open world, so I'm confused as to why people think it shouldn't 'go open world' when it already is. Well, I guess that's a definition thing then.
But I'm with you on the 'running into Pokemon' part, it would kind of ruin the whole catching thing if I saw what's coming miles ahead (or inches if the draw distance sucks ).

Pokemon XD and Colosseum are kind of what I want for the Switch, but actually more open world, without transition screens between adjacent areas ( I mean the 'motor bike riding') but rather a connected world like the main series games.

I'm not gonna get my hopes up again about my first Pokemon in the party trailing me etc., but if they leave out customization once again (ORAS!!!!) I will be angry.

Just gimme that prettier, glossed over SuMo style (mechanics wise) game in a new huge world and I'm happy.
