Hello lovely GBAtemp people, I could do with a bit of help.
I have generally used this site for modding guides, e.t.c. over the years, but have generally found what I needed without having to post, but this time I have got slightly confused...
I originally got my WiiU about a year & a half ago., it's still on 5.3.2., updates have always been blocked.
I have always used Loadiine, with my games spread across 8 64gb SD cards.
My vWii is also modded, with my Wii, Gamecube & Triforce games on an external drive.
This has always been fine for my needs, but I recently got Zelda BOTW, which seems to need an update to play.
So, i'm not quite sure what to do from here.
Sorry for my ignorance/lack of knowledge, but I have been away from the WiiU scene for a while.
I've softmodded original Xbox, Wii, PS2, DS, 3DS, Vita, & others with success, but gerenaaly down to having good advice & guides.
I have missed most/all things that have happened in the last 9/12is months, so if anyone can give me a few pointers, I would be most grateful.
My external HD is fairly full, & i'm fine with keeping my games on the SDs, at this seems easier than having to use a larger external drive, but any advice will be helpful.
Can I just unblock updates, update to the most recent firmware, the re-block updates, or it it better for me to just install custom firmware (& how) ?
Again, apologies for my ignorance on the subject, I have read through the forums & guides, as always, but i'm just not quite sure which direction to head.
Thanks in advance for your help GBAtemp crew.

Use "Wii U USB Helper". Set it up and use it.
Everything will seem a lot clearer afterwards.

@godreborn I am curious now. What do you base that statement on?

I'm not sure how well the apps work on 5.3.2 or even if they work at all. u'll need to update, but the update won't work if the virtual wii has been modified. remember all those cios/NAND backups u made if u followed the tutorial on temp? u'll need those. there may be an easier way though, so let others chime in. ;)

Correct me if I'm wrong but I've had a modded vWii since like 2013 and I've always updated fine. I don't think having the vWii modded affects system updates.

Sooooooooo......
Is anyone actually able to confirm or deny this definitely ?
The problem for me is different members disagreeing on these subjects leaves me in the position I was originally in.
At this point I still have no idea which way to actually go.
I would probably use Kafluke's guide, if I was sure about the vWii thing.
Please can someone tell me for definite if at all possible.

You will be unable to update vWii if it has corrupted IOS'es or cIOS'es. [Or overally, corrupted vWii menu]
You don't need to especially follow his guide, you can follow mine and wiiubru.com/guide if you feel that it doesn't explain something.

Trust me. You'll be fine. vWii modding won't affect Wii U updates unless you brick your vWii by installing regular Wii system files.

OK, I haven't had much time, so I haven't gone the CFW route yet.
All I have do is -
Unblock updates, update to 5.5.1, then reblock updates.
I also updated Loadiine GX2 to the last version.
So, at least here, modding my vWii has not had any effect on updates.
So far, everything is fine - except...
When I attempt to load Zelda BOTW I am still told that I need to update my firmware ?!?
I am very confused once again, anyone have any idea what's happening here ?

Are you sure it's not asking for a game update? BotW on launch required an update to start. Download the latest update and install it too.
