Nintendo Confirms Breath of the Wild as last first party WiiU game

maxresdefault.jpg

Sad but inevitable fate for the WiiU as Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime broke the news.

Speaking to Polygon following the Switch launch event in New York City last Friday, he had the following to say: “From a first-party standpoint, there's no new development coming after the launch of the legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” he said. “We really are at the end of life for Wii U.”

He added that Wii U titles will continue to be sold at retail and on the Nintendo eShop, and the company had not begun any discussion for ceasing online services for the console: “From our standpoint, sunsetting is quite some time into the future. The ongoing activity from an online standpoint on [Mario] Kart and Splatoon is significant. We're going to continue to support that.”

The WiiU has been around for about four and a half years and failed to meet the expectations that the big N had for it. “Even today when I ask people, ‘so what was Wii U all about?,’ I get a wide variety of responses,” Reggie had to say on the matter. “In managing the business, that's just not good.” The company is however much more confident (hopeful?) about their upcoming console touting the slogan “a home console you can take with you".

So the Wii U is the first Nintendo console for a long time that didn't get a Metroid game. Sad.
Nintendo 64, and virtual boy. (IT COUNTS :P ) Also didn't get one, maybe i should add the game and watch as well... so 4 i guess. Besides there is more games out there that also didn't get console releases as well, i hope a Kid icarus uprising like game comes to switch, they really need to try and revive that game, and punch out, and f zero. :)

Yeah, it's been way over a decade since the death of the N64. That's why I said for a long time. I guess there are VC releases and Prime Trilogy on vWii, but they don't count.

When did Crapcom ever license a fan game? I've never heard of that

If there's going to keep the Wii U's online capabilities, then the incentive to find a way to unban users (from games like Splatoon) will still remain relevant.

Hey guys, remember when people got really upset over the original NX leaks and Nintendo responded by saying that they're taking a "three-pillars" approach, that the Switch will be sold concurrently with the 3DS and the Wii U and that Wii U customers needn't worry about their system becoming obsolete after a shockingly short lifespan? Yeah, about that... All PR bullshit, smoke and mirrors.

I wonder how many times Nintendo can screw over their customers before they get wiser. It's been a while now, surely they should start getting the plot by now.

Good ride.

The same way it won't replace the 3DS next year. B-)
Well the 3DS will be still getting first party support, while the Wii U was completely abandoned since late 2015.

What i am more mad at now is how Nintendo forced Tecmo to not release Fire Emblem Warriors on the Wii U but still let it come to the N3DS. Fucking BS, the Wii U install base is millions bigger than that.

Not really a surprise. It was expected.

With this stated as a fact, Paper Mario: Colour Splash is the second last WiiU first party game. There will probably be other WiiU games after Zelda:BotW but who really cares? Well, some collectors probably will as they collect anything WiiU-related but not the rest. Probably just shovelware.

This was obvious to happen , Wii U had been dead since 2012 and it kinda got up on 2015 but then 2016 came and everything on Wii U died.

Thank god they finally killed Wii U and they didn't forced it. Now lets hope Switch doesn't goes with the same problems as Wii U

You don't understand, the Switch will be revolutionary. People probably won't even get it after the 3DS is officially killed.

But at least you'll always have the Switch's:
2-3 hours of battery life
Abysmal launch library
Uncomfortable looking controller
Lack of portability
High price point in Canada/Europe
Paid online

Why not get one at launch?

The Switch is an amazing concept that needs Nintendo to appear on the market and someone competent to make a better version of it. I can't quite recall the Youtuber who came up with the concept, but he's a retro and knock-off reviewer and he came up with the concept of the "Early Worm Effect", which is the exact inverse of "the early bird gets the worm" saying and concerns technology. Essentially, his very accurate observation is that "if an idea is truly revolutionary, a bigger company will pick it up and make a better version of it". It happened to the Oculus Rift - it didn't take long before HTC made a better headset and Sony made an affordable one, filling both segments before the Oculus was even officially released. The same will happen with hybrid computing, if the Switch idea holds any water. Early adopters always get screwed, second generation hardware is always superior.

I'm just happy we actually got a new Zelda for the Wii U. Don't get me wrong I bought the HD versions of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess but I longed for a new Zelda. Too bad they didn't exercise the same intelligence with Metroid. Another title I would have gladly purchased.

Well, to be accurate, that was a portable handheld - at least it's how Nintendo advertised as so no one can say otherwise.

The WiiU version looks to have an odd green tint which makes Link like a hybrid of a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and an Elf.

The problem is that to be a true Nintendo fan you must be a masochist, and have tons of disposable income. So, none of that 'logic' matters.
At the same time, it's their money they keep flushing down the toilet. To this day, the very simple question of 'Are you finally going to fix this VC nonsense (purchasing the same game over and over)?' still gets a 'Stay tune for more BS to come...aka it's been 10 years since everybody else figured it out and we still have no idea'.

like they kept the wii's online going...o wait

It wasn't up to Nintendo to decide wether to kill those or not because the company that was running them went bankrupt

Nintendo can't just go and patch 1000+ games to work with entirely different set of servers it doesn't work like that
