Sad but inevitable fate for the WiiU as Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime broke the news.

Speaking to Polygon following the Switch launch event in New York City last Friday, he had the following to say: “From a first-party standpoint, there's no new development coming after the launch of the legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” he said. “We really are at the end of life for Wii U.”

He added that Wii U titles will continue to be sold at retail and on the Nintendo eShop, and the company had not begun any discussion for ceasing online services for the console: “From our standpoint, sunsetting is quite some time into the future. The ongoing activity from an online standpoint on [Mario] Kart and Splatoon is significant. We're going to continue to support that.”

The WiiU has been around for about four and a half years and failed to meet the expectations that the big N had for it. “Even today when I ask people, ‘so what was Wii U all about?,’ I get a wide variety of responses,” Reggie had to say on the matter. “In managing the business, that's just not good.” The company is however much more confident (hopeful?) about their upcoming console touting the slogan “a home console you can take with you".

Killed it pretty quickly but it was about the same when TP came out for the Wii and Gamecube. Anyway the WiiU will always be special to me and more so than the Wii ever was.

Good. They need to stop focusing on the Wii U. The Switch needs their full attention.

Just keep the online servers up for more than 6 months, because shutting it all down would be stupid.

As long that they keep the Servers online for the Wii U version too, I'm good.

So that means no Metroid game for Wii U, even if they ever do one for the Switch. Fantastic.

Remember when Nintendo said the Wii U would live along the Switch?
Also, the title should be changed to "Last Breath of the Wii U". It'll be more accurate.

The Wii U will still be the nintendo console with the best backwards compatibility considering it can play gamecube games(through awesome nintendont), Wii games and all the VC titles.
They possibly can't port every great Wii U game they made to Switch even if they did already for 3 titles, maybe through third parties like they did with TP HD, but only over the years, still many exclusives remain to enjoy.

    "Breath of the Death" ;p

Whatever, Nintendo. Just make sure not to issue another update and I'll be happy. :P

Proud to be Portuguese but I am in USA.
No. I knew that this year might be Wii U's last time but didn't know that this game is the reason. :)

Surprising absolutely no one. What was the last first party Wii U title to date? Star Fox Zero and Guard? That was almost a year ago at this point. Support has already been dead, you know the Wii U release is only happening at this point out of a sense of obligation on Nintendo's part, announcing the game for the system nearly 2 and half years ago, and teasing fans along with trailers and gameplay ever since. Even though it runs worse on the system compared to the Switch, its clear to see that they feel at this point the Wii U version is something they have to deliver at this point.
