So I'm fairly new to this rooting thing. I have a Galaxy S6 and was stuck with it, after I realized its a peace of trash. Now I'm too poor to upgrade for quite some time. So I thought I may as well get some use out of the thing.
I tried to root back in January, and succeeded, but I tried to flash a OS or something and got stuck in a bootloop, so after a few hours of fumbling, I was able to restore a backup I made. After that, I was spooked away from it until now.

What I look to accomplish:
-Some type of customization? Maybe icons/ new OS look?
-Be keep all of my data and stuff
-Battery saver of some sort, because the S6's god-awful
-Still be able to play pokemon go. I saw they locked out Rooted users, and I still wanna catch 'em all. Don't judge me^ ;)

If anyone's willing to help, it'd be really appreciated, thanks :)

How is Samsung Galaxy S6 trash?
And to answer your questions
-Some type of customization? Maybe icons/ new OS look?
Recommend using xposed and using xposed modules that best fit your device. It depends on which version of Android...
-Be keep all of my data and stuff
Titanium backup let's you backup your data so you can revert it back in case something happens.
-Battery saver of some sort, because the S6's god-awful
Undervolt your CPU or change the governors.
till be able to play pokemon go. I saw they locked out Rooted users, and I still wanna catch 'em all. Don't judge me^
They don't lock you out if you're rooted, however, they lock out custom roms. I could be wrong, but when my phone was stock rooted it allowed me to play but when I flashed cyanogenmod, it locked me out.

The reason i call it trash is because of the major slow downs due to phones ram, the horrendous battery, and the camera. as these are some of the core details in a phone.
And how do i undervolt my CPU or change the governors? never heard of that term before.

What's the specific model of your phone? Settings > About Phone > Model Number
And you can change it with a CPU setter app. It requires root, but I highly recommend getting Device Control. From there, you can change the governors (governors tell the CPU to speed up or to slow down) and the CPU min/max speed. You can't overclock it however, unless there is a custom kernel for your phone, but I haven't seen a custom kernel that allows overclocking in forever :/

i dont care about overclocking, but i do care about battery life, and it performing well enough.

Custom icons and "OS look" has almost nothing to do with root. Look up a launcher like Nova Launcher. Plenty of free icons on the app store as well.
To backup your data and apps you need a backup app or use built in Google backup/Samsung Backup.
The battery on the S6 is not god-awful... Stop playing so much Pokemon Go...
To play Pokemon Go on a root device you need to set up Majisk Manager. Google is your friend.

I have nova launcher, but I'm pretty hesitant when downloading almost anything from the playstore.
and I don't really play it too much due to the battery being bad. My average day of using the phone casually, drains down to 10 percent in maybe 3 1/2 to 5 hours. Then, once at ten percent, an additional 5 minutes.

I can push to 7 hours of on screen time on my Galaxy S7. There is something wrong with your device and it could be quite a few things. I'd recommend Gsam Battery monitor to see if any apps are staying awake when they shouldn't be. I'd also look into changing your Location services, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings off when you don't use them. Uninstall/Disable any apps you don't use or are just bloatware. My Galaxy S7 has a built in cache/ram wiper so if your device has that too then use it or download one from the app store. Also try out 'Good Lock' from the Samsung store, the app will theme your System UI just like how some exposed apps do. If all else fails do a factory reset and slowly install the apps you use, there is a good chance one app is using too many resources and keeping your device in awake mode.

I've looked around for your device at XDA and I've found an unofficial build of CM13 but there are many things broken such as the camera and the fingerprint sensor. I recommend not to use them should you get tempted to. What I do recommend though is to install a modified stock rom such as this. It debloats your device and makes it look better and feel smoother but consider your device is a G920P, I don't think it would install that easily as the one I linked is for the F/FD/I/K/L/S variants.

Root it. Google how to root your device, I recommend using a tutorial that uses CF-autoroot. It's easy enough to use for beginners.

As for Xposed, use one of the versions from here. Samsung heavily modified ART so much that the normal Xposed installers rovo89 made don't work. The versions I linked are specifically modifed for TouchWiz roms.

Also, replace the stock launcher with a better one, preferable Nova Launcher just like what @Luckkill4u suggested. I've used it for nearly 4 years now and it's just irreplaceable. Icon packs that are free and I recommend would be Polycon and CandyCons. They are both clean looking and sharp icon packs that have material design.

Once you're rooted, get Greenify. It hibernates apps (force stops them continuously so that they won't wake up your device). It saves a lot of battery too.

I could answer more specific questions if you like

I just rooted/installed a custom ROM on my S6 edge over the weekend.

I flashed XtreStoLite 3.3.1 and i am so happy with the battery life now.

Keep in mind that installing custom recovery will trip KNOX, as does root access on the S6, i'm lead to believe.

S6 and S7 are very very very similar devices...
You can't play Pokemon Go on custom Rom but you can on rooted stock with exposed.

s-so at the end of the day, what am I doing to my phone..
I'm rooting, installing Xposed with some things? and I've got novalauncher. It's just that I'm afraid that whatever I download will drain more battery in the background or use a ton of ram for no reason.

Pretty much. Also, once you're done rooting, debloat your device by uninstalling system apps that you don't need. If you're afraid to uninstall them, get TiBu Pro and just freeze them to prevent them from starting.

I've also got an s6, but it's from verizon so it's unrootable.

There's a program you run on your computer that disables stuff on your s6 that really helped me. I can't remember what it was called.

I don't think nova uses much battery as I use it and my battery lasts a good while.

Also, I've never experienced any slowdowns and I think the camera's actually pretty amazing. You may just have too much stuff running in the background.
