Don't the Xbox One and PS4 already have 8GB of RAM? Nintendo needs to move forward, not backward..

Yes and No.

From what I've heard, quite a chunk of that is reserved by the OS so that actual usable amount is less (up to 4GB last I heard although this may have increased since through OS updates).

If Nintendo are able to keep their OS to 512MB, in theory it may not be too bad for devs RAM wise.

Also, there are other factors to remember e.g. RAM speed, storage access speed (i.e. if it's on carts they may not need as much RAM for caching), etc.

shouldn't it have 8? you know so the system os has something to use and ensure the game runs smoothly (tegra is a gpu cpu combo chip right? that means it's using system ram)

I think power depends on more than just the sum of the component parts. It's how they work together that matters. I'll gladly admit I know nothing, but if you look at the configuration of the various Xbox and PS4 consoles, the play experience depends on more than just one component.

I'm hoping it's a least powerful enough to do what is shown in the (concept) trailer.

Ps4 and Xbone have 8 go of ram , 3 go for the OS so it leave 5 go maybe 1.5 go for up-scaling to 4k so it give exactly 3.5 go ram for games left like the nintendo switch because im pretty sure switch os gonna be like 400mb or more so it leave 3 .5 go ram like the ps4 and xbone...my theory !

So it is rumored to have 4GB of RAM. Now, I read elsewhere that it would have 32GB of internal storage. Seems small, but then it was also noted to transfer at a rate of 400MB/s. Now, I'm not expert, but having SSD-fast storage seems like a waste when you think about how little there is for storing games, along with the idea that it will also accept microSD, which is certainly much slower than that.....that is, unless that 32GB is not for permanent storage, but for temporary.

In theory, if a game used even 20GB of this fast "storage" as a cache for assets that need quick swapping (excluding things like videos and voice audio), would the system having 4GB of RAM be an issue?

Hmmm. Well I hate to burst people's bubble, but remember the dude who was right about the ps4 pro it's name and it's specs? Recently he said the Switch does have 4gb in the retail unit...As well as claiming the Custom SoC has a max tereflop of 1.5 but due to battery life, he suspects the swtich to not go much over 1.25 tereflop.

This would but the switch around the same over all power as the Xbone. However this means the Switch must have a very weak and low featured filled OS due to the ram. What a shame. Nintendo services are in dire need of a true online experience. Nintendo pretending to be be big brother, Protecting children and people from themselves are clearly more then giving a true in-depth online experience.

My bubble isn't burst. I don't see why it can't get to the maximum when docked.

Doesn't bother me. I hope online stays free.

Low OS RAM usage doesn't necessarily mean no features.

If the features don't always run in the background, then there's no problem.

Sorry but I really want to see the post myself. Is this fp16 or fp32?
