I think the answer is the same reason why they removed the ps2 backwards compatibilty in the ps3 slim. It is too expensive. Xbox can do it but its not perfect.(Last time I checked it wasn't correct me if I am wrong) Nintendo can because they use practically the same hardware.(Its only more powerful) Sony just doesnt want to invest the money in it, it seems. We have PS Now these days for it anyways right?

And if you want to try them so badly buy a dirt cheap PS3. :) They seem to be pretty cheap these days.

So can ps4 still download ps1 and ps2 games?

Also if you check playstation now, i guess you can rent the game if is available if you wanna TRY it out. Of course is cloud streaming so expect not perfect visuals if your internet connection isnt solid :P

I understand they didn't add backward compatibility if they changed the CPU architecture, but what I would have like is a way to unlock PS4 game by inserting the PS3 game.
I have my Beyond Two soul disc, and I had to buy the PS4 version to play it on PS4 ... I bought the game twice u__u
same with my Last of Us game, but I only bought the DLC on PS4, not the full game
too bad games are not ALL cross buy, instead of backward compatible.

having old PS2 or PS3 disc inserted to play current gen game/remake/resale/Minis/Classics/etc. would be a good idea. (but they would lose opportunity to make money buy selling the same game again...)

It's expensive and not an easy thing to do. The PS4 is already an extremely expensive system to make, throwing on PS3 backwards compatibility would just add to the production cost.

It's basically impossible to do on a PS4 - far more difficult than the 360 on the Xbox One due to the PS3 architecture - it's totally different to a PS4, moreso than the 360 is to either PS4 or Xbox One.

Because Sony hates you  - both you and me know that could be quite possible to do, but no, they want you to spend more money don't they.... You're right though, they've showed off their generosity with certain games being cross buy, it should be across the board!

PS1 PS2 And ps3 compatibility? That be like over $1000

I thought it was possible to get upgrade games at discount price, which is why ps3 games are now $50 while ps4 is $60.

I dunno, maybe it only applied to playstation store purchases only but our game stores were also hosting the same offer that if you want you can upgrade ps3 games to ps4 for only $10.

If i say how it could work.

Insert ps3 disc into ps4

Game recognise disc in playstation store database.

Ask if you like to purchase the ps4 game for (Insert specified money here) at reduced cost

Downloads game with savings.

But then again, newer games have crossbuy cross play so is all one purchase for each system you have :)

Though some games i wish had it. FINAL FANTASY X HD COLLECTION :glare:

When the original PS3 had PS2 backwards compatibility it required a seperate CPU in order to process PS2 games. Thats the reason the PS3 was so expensive originally. When they removed the Emotion Engine it made the console cheaper to produce. Even though the PS3 and PS4 discs have similar file structures they are trying to get more people to use the PS Now service. Which not everyone has or can afford decent enough internet to make it play through smoothly.

Because the PS4 isn't powerful enough to emulate a PS3 at commercial level quality. I doubt the top gaming PCs would be.

This is why people should hold onto older consoles since they eventually end up wanting to play the older games again.

In my opinion, the PS4 would use hardware simulation to play PS3, just as the PS3 handled backwards compatibility with the PS2. I'm not really sure if I'm correct though.

This is the reason why i didn't buy ps4. If the ps4 neo will have backward compatibility i may consider buying it.

A hardware-based PS2 backwards compatible PS3 makes for a great legacy gaming machine. My CECHA02 lets me have the entire PS1 and PS2 library plus all the homebrew emulators too! It's great :)

Yup with all those 60 GB storage and glitches in some games. :creep:

All joking aside, the 720P Classic games are actually nice to have. But no emulation of any kind is perfect. Even official emulation. PS2 games have some glitches. (FINAL FANTASY X-2) And some graphical problems, and i think not every game is playable for some reason, maybe lag or whatever. But i never had problems with the games personally.

Let's be honest here, keeping our old systems are best option, why?
  1. Adding backwards functions will make the console more valuable obviously as you can see with the ps3.
  2. Having it in the system would be a deterrance to the PS4, cause then everyone would have it simply to play ps3, ps2, or ps1 and not buy any from PSN to play. Not only that but would be hard for players to focus on ps4 library of games with all the other options.
  3. Sony would charge ridiculous prices for the systm. (You thought $599 was bad enough in 2006 E3 try $1000 or more.
  4. SCALPERS. The main problem.
  5. EXCLUSIVES ARE WHAT SELL GAMES AND CONSOLES.
Having one thing that does everything, is great for consumers and works for us, but not for business. Cause there no reason to get anything else putting others out of business. This is why having exclusive content is always important. Get a ps4 for fighting games, Xbox one for shooting games, Wii u for Good long lasting replay and party games, and steam for super sale deals and free online games. If all that was in one, then there is no reason to have different consoles. Bad for business.
