Hi, everyone! I dabbled a little bit of modding my Wii U by blocking updates with Open DNS and spoofing my firmware to 5.5.0. I believe my actual firmware is on 5.3.2. I honestly don't remember too much about what I did since it was such a long time ago.

It looks like the latest firmware is 5.5.1, so do I just spoof it again with the 5.5.1 files and simply just overwrite the 5.5.0 spoof? How does that work?

How do I go about updating my games and apps? I think my Wii U pretty much blocks all of the update servers, so do I disable my DNS for a moment and update my games and apps, or is there a way to update those without having to mess with my DNS again? For example, I want to update the Netflix app so my kids can watch their shows using the Wii U.

Bonus question: Is there anything new I should look into when it comes to modding the Wii U right now? All I did was spoof my firmware and blocked the updates. Any help and suggestions would be much appreciated.

According to wupinstaller.com, firmware spoofing only updates a single file called version.bin, which tells your Wii U which firmware you're supposed to be on. It's safe to assume that you can spoof your firmware to 5.5.1 without any issue.

If you want to update your games without updating/spoofing/whatever, simply download the encrypted update files (I use JNUSTool), put them in your SD:\install\ folder and install the files with WUP Installer. That's it.

Bonus answer: Loadiine and Cafiine are what's hot right now, but they're only homebrews. True Wii U modding should come around when the IOSU exploit gets released.

Thanks for the answer! Unfortunately, I've been trying different ways to install the files through wupinstaller.com and loading the homebrew channel through several different ways, but my Wii U keeps on freezing or crashing every time it tries to load the payload of the websites. I've been trying different methods for the past couple of days in my free time, but nothing seems to work.

Can anyone help me overcome my Wii U freezing/crashing every time I try to do this? Is there a way I can launch the homebrew channel offline so I can try to access the WUP installer via the homebrew channel?

Edit: Forgot to mention I was able to find the updates for the games using JNUS, but is it possible to find the update files for apps like Netflix? I tried to disable the DNS before when my system was spoofed to the latest version, but Netflix still wanted me to update my console before I can update the app itself.

The method I use to load homebrews is going to the Wii U's web browser, deleting cookies and loading the exploit via loadiine.ovh. It work pretty consistently. Make sure the exploit you're using is for 5.3.2 and not 5.5.0. (Check the last 3 the digits of the URL.)

To my knowledge, the only kernel exploit we currently have is the browser exploit, and while you can technically host the exploit yourself, it's still the same exploit.

I don't know about that one. I couldn't find the Netflix's title ID. I do believe some apps require your console to be up to date (à la Youtube/Web browser 3DS), which might be the case for Netflix. I'd recommend you spoof your console to 5.5.1 and download the update (if there is one) straight from the eShop.

Awesome! I was able to grab the title updates, load the homebrew launcher through a payload, install my updates using a WUP installer in the HBL, and update my Netflix on the home screen by spoofing access to the eShop. I'm hoping it didn't update the firmware since I checked and made sure my DNS settings were still intact, but it should be good. Thanks a lot for all of your help!
