Hi guys. So i just got the "new 3ds XL" as a surprise gift from my GF and i just ordered a sky3ds+ in order to play games online but looking around im not too sure its the easiest way to play 3DS games online? my version is 10.7.0-32E. What would you guys recommend me to do? Also i dont have the option to extract my own header so i would need to get that somewhere aswell. What should i do in my situation?

Your new to the 3DS I assume so for now stick with the Sky3ds+ and at some point after getting more knowledge you can use the sky3ds+ as a cubic ninja cartridge and follow this tut for arm9loaderhax https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki

You can extract a private header by using a powersaves and any cheap game but sky is a little more complicated then that since there are I believe 3 different types of headers.

I am indeed very new to this world which is why i have a hard time finding my way around. So you suggest i just stick with the sky3ds+. Then i need to figure out a way to get myself a private header :P

I'm actually saddened by the way people are being unhelpful to you (from my point of view at the very least). The EASIEST way to play online is to just do it with either an installed game or an original cartridge. Playing roms with the Sky is literally the only thing that can get you banned from online. Installing a CFW is way more convenient and it cost nothing. If you really don't want to deal with doing it yourself for whatever reason, it probably still would be cheaper to just pay someone to do it for you.
And to the guy who post the a9lh guide, maybe you had good intentions, but you just send someone who knows nothing about the 3ds and wants to spend as little time in hacking it as possible to the HARDEST hacking process there is. Like really guys, 100% boot is nice and all, but to most people it isn't worth doing all that extra work and half breaking their 3ds. That guide still can be useful to you OP, but just leave it at the CFW part and enjoy your console, if you find the the 90% boot rate to be unbearable for you, you can always continue the guide latter.

Sky is safe with a private header and read again

Look man, I don't know if it's because in the internet there is no tone or something, but I thing you got somehow offended by my post, and if that is the case I apologice. I still think you were the most helpful one, but to me it seemed like you were suggesting he delved into a9lh instead of just CFW, which to someone who preferred to pay money for a sky rather than using the free solution is an unnecessary convoluted process.

The reason I think he wasn't being helped properly is because the sky is just an inferior deal compared to CFW when playing online games, and the guy specifically asked to play online. Is just a fact that installing a game is a way easier than having to buy a game and ripping its header to inject it into the sky to play online safely.

While installing a game maybe easier once you are running CFW, downgrading a system on 10.7 and setting up a CFW is a LOT harder and risky than setting up a private header in a Sky card for a person new to the scene...

For your situation you would need to launch gateway menu to dump a cart you own or buy a cheap one to dump. You will need to use sky to downgrade, launch gateway (no gateway cart needed) to dump. Extract the header and move it to your sky. At this stage your are also able to setup cfw if you wished or upgrade back to stock latest.

Until an update from nintendo arrives you have unlimited attempst at downgrade. Unless you are really, really incompetent in following instruction a full unrecoverable brick is vertually impossible due to the 3ds recovery system.

If its all to much, let me know and I'll pm you a virgin header.

Good luck bloke, don't let it overwhelm you. Time consuming but easy.

Wow Guys thanks alot for the quick responses and theres a decent number of options it seems. Is there a benefit for using CFW over sky3ds? I Mean for now i just wanna be able to play the games online doing wondertrades etc. Sorry for asking stupid questions but its just so i know if i should return the sky3ds or not

Agreed. I'd advise CFW but not necessarily a9lh. So the guide is the right guide but the "arm9loaderhax" in the post wasn't really the best thing to write.

Basically, with a CFW, you can do everything you want. Play games online, wondertrades, acessing the eShop and stuff still works too obviously, etc... but also play out of region games, install homebrew on your home menu, play patched games (translated MHX if you're too impatient to wait for MH Gen), really whatever you want.
With Sky, you can "only" play untouched games (not patched and stuff) and you have to use private headers to go online (no need to deal with that using cia files on a CFW). The advantage is that you can argue it's more convenient than cia files for offline games (just drag and drop instead of installing a file).

Now, with both of them, you should be good :P
Use a CFW (after installing it) for what you can't do with a Sky, and use the Sky for what it's more convenient for, now that you bought it.

1)downgrade your system to 9.2 firmware by using cubic ninja rom in your sky3ds
1a) to downgrade, you need to setup homebrew channel first
2)install emunand
3)install cfw (for example reinand)

With cfw, you can install games that are in cia format directly to your 3ds' sd card slot. The games will then appear on the home menu screen like an eshop game. Since the games looks eshop games, you can play online without needing a header. The benefits of cfw is future proof meaning you do not have to worry about nintendo trying to block the sky3ds flashcard again

You're going to need the Sky3DS (with Cubic Ninja loaded on it) to downgrade the machine in the first place, since firmware 10.7 does not allow you to use the browser to downgrade. Once you've downgraded it you can install Menuhax and CFW and will no longer need the Sky. a9lh is not needed for CFW, although it makes things nicer. I'd keep the Sky, but you may need money more than I do.

CFW doesn't give you problems with getting banned for using public headers. And you can run GBA games and DSiware, and homebrew and emulators. And foreign games and hacked games, which the Sky can't run. (Although if you don't downgrade, you could still use the Sky3DS as Cubic Ninja to run the emulators and most homebrew if you want.)

So if im understanding this correctly i can do CFW and sky3ds for 2 seperate things? Example: (i love the pokemon games on 3ds btw :P) If i want go play pokemon X/Y/omega ruby/alpha saphire i can put them on the sky3ds with a private header and its all good and dandy. If i want to play pokemon heartgold/soul silver etc i need to use CFW since its DS(i?) games?

CFW can't play DS games neither can the SKY, although to get a private header you need to extract it from games you buy and also get powersaves.

CFW allows DSiware, not cartridge DSi games, although there are ways to unblock DS flashcarts if you have CFW.
