I have my o3ds on firmware 10.3 still because it gives me the possibility of downgrading since it wasn't patched till 10.4. However, I need to access Pokebank for that event thing going on and it ends "tomorrow"... hopefully they don't mean today.

When I try to use Pokebank, it says a system update is required to use the service (Pokebank itself is already v1.2, the latest). Trying to open the web browser says the same d*mn thing, even trying to see friend status does it. I have not had the updates downloaded to my 3DS yet, no nag popup has happened, I've had wifi off since before 10.4 appeared.

I registered at OpenDNS and blocked every domain listed in the instructions for blocking updates, including the 2 extra stated later in the thread, changed my 3DS' DNS to both of OpenDNS' IPs, yet it still says it requires a system update. I changed the DNS servers in my router to try it as well. I also turned off spotpass, both options.

The only thing I haven't done is trying to start my 3DS in safe mode because I don't know if that will do anything other than clear any update information for the system update.

Do you guys know what the deal is and how I can access Pokebank without updating? Is there a way to alter my sysNAND version to the latest version to trick them into thinking I already have the latest version? I saw something about to altering nVer with some file and tool to spoof the version to be able to use eshop...

I would recommend you go ahead and downgrade to 9.2 so you can just use emuNAND on the latest version.

In addition, as a relatively recent development, one can currently downgrade even if he or she is on 10.4-10.7. However, it is not recommended that you update to 10.7 because it blocks so many entry points (mainly browserhax and menuhax).

Edit: To be clear, you can still use browserhax on 10.3 by following the instructions here to bypass the browser-version-check.

The reason I don't have CFW installed on this is because it's my main system I use to play my cartridge games on and the only thing I really wanted to be able to do with it was installing my own themes... I'm holding onto 10.3 firmware because of that kernel access and hope that makes a way for installing your own themes as if lthey were downloaded from Nintendo instead of overwriting a current theme or using something like menuhax. However, all I need right now is the ability to use Pokebank and not have it tell me I need the system update.

EDIT: by the way, thank you to anyone that can help... you guys that know all the ins and out of this stuff really help someone like me that doesn't really have time anymore to research through all the hundreds of posts for specific answers... have an auditory experience on the house:

Everyone should listen to these... and pretty much anything from Shatter.

Online services require the latest system version now. Any attempt to circumvent this that I'm aware of would require CFW anyway. Your needs still necessitate a downgrade to 9.2.

You can downgrade, make an emuNAND, and convert custom themes to .cia through Howling Theme Tool and install them and select them from the menu as if they were a Nintendo-made theme.

Also, piracy.

I'm hoping for that ability as a normal thing using kernel access stuff to install them or something later down the road after people experiment.

If there's a way to spoof out the browser check, shouldn't there be a way to spoof the check on Pokebank? And what about that thing I read for using some tool to install a file that alters the nVer for eshop access?

If anything, we can still downgrade with hardmod installation, can't we? I backed up my system with a temporary hardmod back on 9.5.0-22, whatever the last one was before they lost browserhax before... I'm tempted to open my 3DS and do it again for this version point, but I had some questions about that first...

You could be holding your breath for a long time if you're going to wait for something that might not even happen. If it does happen, it could be years. I highly recommend you downgrade to 9.2 so you can do what you want with themes and also have online access (plus the other benefits of being on 10.7) on emuNAND.

The browser version-check works separate from the online services update-check for everything else. Ctr-httpwn is your only hope for Pokebank if downgrading is not an option. Anything else I'm aware of to regain online access requires you be on ≤9.2 with CFW/emuNAND.

You can downgrade without a hardmod. All you need on 10.3 is access to the Homebrew Launcher, a 9.2 update pack for O3DS and your region, and a downgrading app like SafeSysUpdater.

that ctr-httpwn sounds like exactly what I need, I'm taking some time to read through it, but off-hand, this will work on an O3ds on 10.3, right? Just being sure since it says not to use it from o3ds browserhax.

By the way, the reason I'm not doing the downgrade right now is because I don't want to mess with all the converting my games into cia files to be able to play them and stuff, I prefer just using the cartridges where my saves are already at. Unless emunand can now use cartridges... but I don't have time to mess with all that right now, if ctr-httpwn can let me bypass the Pokebank update requirement, that's all I need.

You should launch ctr-httpwn using menuhax, not browserhax, on O3DS. However, I have no experience using ctr-httpwn.

You can run cartridges just fine on emuNAND; there is no need to convert your games. In addition to the aforementioned perks of emuNAND, you are also guaranteed future cartridge compability by having an up-to-date emuNAND. Assuming you stay on 10.3 indefinitely, it is likely future games won't work with 10.3.

I wish I was all up to date on the 3DS hacking scene... there's been so many developments, I feel like I just started messing with this for the first time every time I need to use something...

I was planning on using my second 9.2.0-20 3DS for homebrew, this 3DS was originally just going to get updated like normal. I wonder, though, with the whole downgrading thing, when you downgrade, does it retain all your 3DS' unique data and stuff, as if it just ran an actual update file from nintendo?

If you do everything right, yes.

Actually, there is actually A LOT of benefits in downgrading and using a cfw.

I also have 2 3DS, one i would use only for homebrews and hacks and the other stay clean...
at the end i just downgraded both of them. There is no bad side.

That is correct. It should be noted, however, that after you downgrade to 9.2, you'll probably create an emuNAND and update it to 10.7 anyway. Since you will likely (and should) use emuNAND and never touch your 9.2 sysNAND, your emuNAND will be as though you updated your 10.3 3DS to 10.7.

What do you mean there is no benefit of downgrading and using a CFW? I've listed quite a few benefits.

I understand all that about emunand already... but didn't know you could use cartridges now.

Right now, I'm trying to figure out how I get from having an o3ds with no hax or homebrew installed, all original stuff on firmware 10.3, to having ctr-httpwn running... before the end of the night.

  1. Put the homebrew starter kit onto your SD card
  2. Use browserhax (you will have to follow the instructions to bypass the update nag)
  3. As soon as you successfully load the Homebrew Launcher, install menuhax
  4. Load the Homebrew Launcher with menuhax
  5. Run ctr-httpwn through the Homebrew Launcher

you could always use cartridges. And the Eshop. And update to the last version.
And also pirated games as well.

It's is easy as that?

If I back up my card and install this, I can just restore my card backup to clear it all out like it was never installed, right?
