Welp, I'm having more troubles setting up the CFW then downgrading...

When I select EmuNand9, it returns me to the homebrew launcher menu. I tried using PastaCFW, but the same thing happens.

That was happening to me. It's because you're trying to launch it through the emunand. Go from sysnand to homebrew menu, decrypt9, do your FBI injection things but choose to do it to the emunand option on Decrypt9 settings.

Edit: oh my bad you said Emunand9. yeah still that was happening to me too so i used the gateway menu launcher.dat to set up an emunand partition and back up my 9.2 nand.

Edit2: also mine crashed during downgrading process too, and I just ran the safesysupdater again and it worked the second time. it installed the missing tiles that got interrupted.

Hmm not sure why you have .3ds versions of TinyFormat and FBI. OKay so you can load the homebrew menu somehow correct? In the 3ds folder where you put homebrew you should put the GW.3dsx file to launch the gateway menu from the homebrew menu. Scroll over till you see format emunand partition. (back up your SD card on your computer before you do this because it will delete EVERYTHING) and then after it's done formatting emunand, you should scroll over to the back up NAND option and run that. It will take a long time to do that. Make some coffee, watch anime, do whatever in that time lol. Then put your SD card back in your computer and cut and paste the NAND.bin file somewhere and KEEP IT FOREVER in case something happens to your system and it gets bricked. this file can fix that with a hard mod. Now then you should have emunand set up and now from the homebrew menu you can launch reinand from it's .3dsx version. I can never get the reinand.dat to boot correctly so i use the reinand.3dsx version to boot. Now to be able to install any .cia from the reinand mode you should inject FBI into your health and safety app. to do that you need to do the following.

1) Download and put decrypt9 on your SD card (https://gbatemp.net/threads/download-decrypt9-open-source-decryption-tools-wip.388831/ ) 2) launch homebrew launcher. Launch decrypt9 3) dump your health and safety app to your sd card 4) use a program called Universal Inject Generator to inject FBI(the cia installer) into hs.app(health and safety app dumped by decrypt9) 5) Use the program and inject fbi into hs.app, it should generate 2 files, FBI_inject_with_banner.app, and FBI_inject_no_banner.app. 6) Take any one of those 2 and rename it to hs.app, and place it back on your sd card. 7) boot into homebrew menu, Load Decrypt9 8) Inject hs.app back into the system in the emunand option on decrypt9 menu. You should now have a cia installer injected into your system.


EDIT: also did you ever fix your partial downgrade by redoing it? or some way? Can you run the downgrade checker homebrew app that tells you if you're missing any files or not?

Shit, even GW 3.7.1 won't load up. It gives me a black screen. I tried using MenuHax and BrowserHax.

you need to do the downgrade again. because it's partial, otherwise gateway would load properly if you were on true 9.2 sysnand.

if i remember correctly, you did say it crashed during the downgrade, right? then you should redowngrade to fix that.

I had problems with sysUpdater, with that common CIA error. However, when I used safeSysUpdater, it downgraded "successfully". But, when I ran the Gateway firmware again, the same problem occured. I used the version checker found here: https://github.com/svanheulen/downgrade_check/releases , and here is the result. I think that my system is still franken'd.

Some people on other forums have tried updating to the latest firmware, then downgrading again, but I shouldn't do that, because the latest is 10.5, which is impossible to downgrade using browserhax/menuhax, right? Or should I try that?

Try to launch sysupdater through browserhax and Run the downgrade a second time.

I ran the sysUpdater again through browserHax, and it half-worked. It said Loading CIA Informations... and then Downgrade complete, and it rebooted me back into the Home menu. However, nothing changed. GW still black screened on opening, and now, sysupdater has the same effect.

I was having issues with partial downgrades till I upgraded my 9.9 N3ds to 10.3(NOT 10.5) via that sysupdater HB and then successfully downgraded to 9.2.
I tried this after reading about others having success this way, and it does indeed seem more stable downgrading from 10.3 for me.

I used the upgrade option when upgrading and the downgrade option when downgrading.
You'd of course need to put the 10.3 FW's corresponding cia in your updates folder alone, deleting the 9.2 updates prior.

I can't actually speak for the safety of this, as upgrading prior to downgrade adds an extra step where something could go wrong, but anecdotally it seems to work pretty well.

When you are done with downgrading, you should get arm9loaderhax. It takes full control over the system upon pressing power button, 100% cfw boot rate, sysnand loading times, etc.

I'm aware of that, hence I said I'm willing to wait for updates on the CFW until it can play them.

There will never be any updates to CFW to let you play DS games without a flashcart. Unless maybe Nintendo release DS games as virtual console (meaning we can inject roms), which isn't likely considering you can play DS games directly from the cartridge.

Someone suggested FE:Fates, but could I use something cheaper, like Shovel Knights? I read on a reddit thread that it was possible, but some people were running into issues...

Get oot3d and a power save dongle. With a power save dongle, you can inject oothax onto it and run hbl.

And to add to that, when grabbing a power save file for oothax, you are still choosing 9.2, as safesysupdater still replaces native firm first.

Oot or another 3ds is needed.

Fire Emblem Fates is the only game cart with a 10.3 update on it at the moment.

Fates cart should contain a stub browser version too. All 9.9+ cart updates should have stub browsers, which means you can't use them until you hit up sys settings and update from there.
