Hey folks!

Since there hasn't been a successful translation of Rhythm Tengoku The Best + yet, I decided to take a crack at it.

Downloads

Before getting into any other boring details, let's get the downloads out of the way. In order to keep things legal I'm only going to distribute what I have created in the form of a binary patch on the ROMFS of a clean ROM dump. Since a tutorial on how to get the ROMFS file is well beyond this thread I'll just link you to a handy Reddit thread about extracting from a decrypted CIA here. Any other info on how to decrypt/repack a 3DS ROM can be found elsewhere on this forum.

Version 12 (Feb 24)

HANS Shortcut

If you're playing from a cartridge or would like an easier way to play the patched version without rebuilding a 3DS/CIA and then reinstalling the game, you can use the HANS tool to use a ROMFS file on your SD card. Furthermore, you can create a shortcut to launch you directly into Rhythm Tengoku without needing to configure the game each time! Once you patch your ROMFS, save it to your SD card as: sd://hans/00155A00.romfs To use the shortcut, extract the following ZIP into the root of your SD card:

Patching

The xpatch file above was created using the XDelta3 software which is capable of creating and applying the patch. There are TWO versions of XDelta available. Make sure you use version 3. You can find XDelta3 here:
Before patching, ensure you have a clean ROMFS. The MD5 of my ROMFS prior to modification is:
  • 01580a6271177bbb768909154124d3f0
Since this is a binary patch it's unlikely that it'll work on any other file.

To apply the patch run the command:
Code:
xdelta3 -d -s romfs.bin englishv10.xpatch romfs.english.bin

Where:
  • -d = Decompress (apply the patch)
  • -s romfs.bin = Source File (romfs.bin is an example name, change to your ROMFS filename)
  • englishv10.xpatch = The patch file downloaded from the link above (v10 as of this writing)
  • romfs.english.bin = The name of the new file to create from the patch
If all went well you should now have a new file: romfs.english.bin (or what ever you named it). Check the MD5 of the newly created file against the hash next to the download linked above.

Now just proceed to either use HANS' ROMFS redirection or repack it into a ROM and play!

NOTE: Since this translation isn't yet complete, if you intend to download the updates between now and completion, you may want to save yourself the trouble and just use HANS.

NOTE 2: People have reported that re-installing the game in CIA format has been clearing their save data. I highly recommend using HANS in the mean time, and if you want to install the game, back up your save first!

Progress

I haven't been methodically going through and translating things to keep a tidy list but here's a good amount of what's currently translated. Note: I don't plan on going crazy with the game intros and translating any of the textures since that would be a very large amount of work per-game.

If I may ask, what are you going to do with the minigame where you play as the human translating alien speech to Japanese?
The way text displays makes it look a little awkward for translation.

I haven't played through the entire game yet, but there may be some cases (such as game title animations) where it'll remain Japanese. I'll do as much as I can though. The first step is translating all the strings, which should hopefully encompass most of the text in the game.

Still working on it! I decided to take a look at the font issue (missing glyphs) and unfortunately there aren't any tools to extract/pack the BFFNT format. The only tool that comes close can only render the font so I've been writing my own tool. On the bright side I've got the font graphics extracted into a PNG file now so the next step is to figure out how to repack it into a compatible BFFNT :)

Here's proof of the font progress:

Cheers!
