I got this unit for cheap as a second-hand unit. It dents but nonetheless function normally. I initially got it at an outdated firmware of version 2.X.X-XXX which I updated to a higher firmware via Shin Megami Tensei IV to version 4.5.0-XX. (I'm leaving some numbers or letter in "X" since I could not remember the specifics.)

Everything seems fine, including my access to the internet with the same unit when I attempted to install rxTools on it from this tutorial: https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-installing-rxtools-custom-firmware-3ds-and-2ds.390867/. Note: This is already my third attempt in installing rxTools to three different units, the first two of which were a success. It is only on this third attempt that I think I quite messed up due to the updated method as you see now.

I was following everything just fine when I encountered an issue at the section 4a, bullet #12 (since rxTools would not boot to sysnand, I booted emunand instead by launching rxTools via web browser (go.gateway-3ds.com/). It booted on emunand from there just fine as evidenced by RX prefix that comes with the firmware to which the unit is running.

Confident that the unit is in rxMode emunand, I took the liberty of updating emunand version by updating it via the system setting. Sadly, after some time of downloading the update, it ultimately failed for some reason.

Since then, even after going through the effort of formatting the unit's system memory, I have been having trouble connecting to the internet, especially obvious when in system settings (the signal suddenly just loses signal bars from full bars, only to return when no longer in the system settings). Also, whenever I try to open my 3DS's web browser, I am always being presented with the "Nintendo 3DS Service User Agreement." Twice in a row every time even.

Another issue I have also noticed is that my unit is missing the "Health & Safety" icon which I injected with BigBlueMenu.cia as instructed in the tutorial I was following.

Long story short: I seem to have messed up the system which resulted to the mentioned problem that merely formatting the system memory apparently could not fix.

Anyone experienced the same? How were you able to fix it?

Just for reference, I am having the same error as this as seen on this video (Wi-Fi is enabled, yet losing bar signal intermittently; now also apparent when in home menu. Mine is probably worst as I could not browse the internet using the unit's built-in web browser.):

look i have no exp with the problem personally . . . but i know how to fix it
1. get a ds flashcard and use that to install rxtools mset rop for 4.x
2. use mset to boot rxtools devmode(pastamode)
3. get sysupdater and the 9.2 update pack and . . . update sysnand
4. . . . claim victory

I also have the same gist that updating the unit to a higher firmware might likely fix the issue it is having at the moment. However, due to the constraints of not being able to connect to the internet and not having a game cartridge to do so manually, I was unable to the updates.

By the way, have you a tutorial which shows just those steps you mentioned?

[Update]

I tried installing rxTools MSET using an R4 Flash Cart like the one I used with one of the first two 3DSes I installed rxTools with. While the installation was a success, I am getting an error when trying to boot to rxTools via the system settings > other settings > profile method -- it crashes and just automatically reboots the system (just like how it did when I installed Gateway MSET.)

lol you do
Launching rxTools through the System Settings app - MSET!
These steps will downgrade your System Settings in your sysNand to the 4.x or 6.x version, which is where we will install the exploit. It is the second best entrypoint to booting rxTools, in my opinion.

Note: You need to use a CIA installer other than BigBlueMenu. Use FBI or Devmenu_2x
Please read the section Understanding FBI at the very bottom of this guide before using FBI.
If you don't want to read that, use Devmenu_2x, it is simpler to use.

All users:
Want to launch rxTools via MSET so that you don't need to connect to the internet? Select your system version:

4.X
Warning: Spoilers inside! Use one of the following methods:
  • EASIEST METHOD: If you have a DS flashcard that works on your 3DS, open the MSET folder in the rxtools download and put the .nds file (rxinstaller.nds) on your DS flashcard's SD card. Now run it with your DS flashcard and select "rxtools 4.x".
  • To install MSET with FBI, you need to have FBI 1.4.14 or higher on your sysnand. Simply launch rxmode sysnand, launch FBI, and press SELECT. Now, select "rxtools3.x 4.x". MSET should now be installed.
  • To install MSET with the internet browser, simply put the rxinstaller.bin (from the MSET folder) on your SD card root. Then launch the browser and go to http://dukesrg.github.io/?rxinstaller.bin or http://dukesrg.no-ip.org/3ds/cakes/?rxinstaller.bin . It should freeze and crash, and send you back to the home menu. MSET should now be set up.
To launch rxTools via MSET, just turn on your 3ds, go to System Settings-> Other Settings-> Profile-> Nintendo DS Profile, and rxTools should boot.

How to Update your 3DS/2DS to 9.0 or 9.2
If you want to boot rxTools as soon as you turn on your 3DS, then you need to set-up Menuhax; and to use Menuhax, you need to be on 9.0 - 9.2 firmware.
Warning: This can brick your 3DS if done incorrectly! Be sure that you follow the instructions carefully!

Requirements:
  • BigBlueMenu installed in sysnand (Section 4 if you don't have Gateway or Ninjhax) OR any other cia installer on Sysnand.
  • A rxTools 3.0 nightly (preferably the one linked in Section 1)
Let's get started.
  1. See AidanLumina's tweet here and click Files for downgrade/manual update.
  2. Download one of the O3DS 9.2 packs
  3. Picture
    h535.png
  4. Once downloaded, open the archive and find the "updates" folder; place it on your SD card. There should be many cia files in that folder.
    • Example: SD:/updates/0004013000008003.cia
  5. Download Sysupdater
  6. Open the archive and put sysUpdater.cia on your SD card
  7. Insert your SD card in your 3DS
  8. Hold L while launching rxTools to get into the rxTools menu. If using rxTools 2.5.2, hold R instead.
  9. Press DPAD RIGHT until you highlight ADVANCED OPTIONS, then press A. Skip this step if using rxTools 2.5.2
  10. Go down to DEVMODE or PASTA MODE and press A
  11. After a few seconds, you should now be in sysnand; firmware spoofing is disabled but cias can still be launched in this mode.
  12. Launch you CIA installer
  13. Install sysUpdater.cia (Destination: SD if using FBI)
  14. Once installed, press HOME to see sysUpdater wrapped as a gift; unwrap it.
  15. Launch sysUpdater
  16. sysUpdater will ask you if you are sure you want to go ahead with the update; choose to accept it.
    • It will also tell you that you shouldn't be in Gateway mode, or have firmware spoofing. Do not worry about this, DEVMODE / PASTA MODE has no firmware spoofing, so sysUpdater will work as intended. Just be absolutely sure you are in DEVMODE / PASTA MODE (line 13), not RXMODE SYSNAND!
  17. Wait for sysUpdater to finish. When it is done, your 3DS will reboot into 9.0 or 9.2 firmware! You can now follow the steps to use Menuhax if you'd like.
If you can't find the 9.2 pack in AidanLumina's MEGA folder
  1. Click HERE
  2. Click the CIA Format DLC's, Themes & Updates [Archive] result
  3. Click View Full Version : CIA Format DLC's, Themes & Updates at the top of the page
  4. Find the thread titled [MEGA] [CIA/BIN] MSET 4.X & 6.X backups, Browser backups, Update packs (All Regions)
  5. Scroll down to the section titled Updates
  6. Download either the 9.2 modified update pack for your region, or a 9.0 or 9.2 Full Update Pack for you region
taken from this guide
Everything seems fine, including my access to the internet with the same unit when I attempted to install rxTools on it from this tutorial: https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-installing-rxtools-custom-firmware-3ds-and-2ds.390867/.

The thing is I no longer have the means to connect my 3DS unit to the internet and is thus limited to methods that are offline unless I could fix my internet connection with this particular unit.

Note: My other two units (classic and classic XL) could connect to the internet just fine.

By the way, should I re-establish my internet connection with this unit, I would only be needing such to install rxTools in this and will probably sell it as a gig.

. . . no part of what i quoted for you requires the system to connect to the internet
in fact the whole reason to install mset is to not need internet to launch rxtools

Ohh, right. I've already tried installing rxTools MSET and was a success, but the execution (trigerring rxTools via MSET) was not -- there is an error which causes the system to auto-restart afterwards.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I could not proceed with updating my unit to version 9.0 - 9.2 as I am uncertain how BBM fared when I injected it via sysnand, especially after doing a failed update of emunand.

What did you use to install mset? Newer rxtools versions use a rxinstaller.bin that I believe is installed from the rxTools menu, that's not what you need. You need the older .nds version since from the sound of your post you are using an outdated rxTools version. It would be best to update to the latest nightly.

Maybe the Wi-Fi turning off at the system setting is normal, but when trying to open the web browser and it says it cannot connect to the internet, I guess that kind of issue is not a least bit normal.

I did use the .nds installer of rxTools MSET via an R4 Card which installed successfully, only to get an error trying to trigger rxTools via the system settings > other settings > profile method which then restarts the unit. The same was also true when I tried making Gateway boot up via the MSET method. Got any idea what makes both MSET boot ups to crash and restart the unit?
