I wouldn’t give this suggestion a year ago. As there were not many 3DS homebrew developers active then. But the 3DS scene has come along rather nice lately, especially after Ninjhax 2.5, last summer. And gbatemp should really encourage every single initiative for 3DS homebrew coding. So therefore I suggest an official 3DS Homebrew competition in 2016! If there isn’t enough interest in the gbatemp crew, I could help with coordinate, set up the rules, award prices etc.

What do you think about this?

I remember wololo.net doing a similar thing with the Vita. I think it was the revitalize competition or something along those lines, and was based upon the best Rejuvenate homebrew. It turned out to be quite a good and successful competition IMO.

So yeah, I think a 3DS homebrew competition would be very good! :)

If a tiny homebrew community like Wololo could do this (and $3000 raised, more than our regrettable decap fundraiser) I don't see why we couldn't.

I would support and donate to this like crazy, but remember, you're going to have a bad time if you try to organize this through temp management.

Why? GBAtemp has done such things in the past

As for the 3ds... you can but try. I am not sure if the interest is truly there but as previously covered I am not that into the 3ds so I could be off.

The reason why is Costello pretty much swore off the practice after the last one in 2011, saying it was just too much trouble etc. He has mused about doing it again from time to time but hasn't pulled the trigger. I have some ideas though. Need some time to sort them out.
(Interest in 3ds homebrew does exist. The smilebasic Ogiri contest in Japan garnered 166 entries which is impressive considering SB 'brew is constrained to a limited interpreter that costs $10 mind you -- and no financial rewards!)

Yay! That was many! It sounds like you, zoogie, like this idea as much as I do. I think it would be possible to do this if we would have at least one gbatemp staff, with front page posting authority etc., to work with this. As for FAST6191, you don't want to be a part of it. But I guess that you wouldn't mind if others are doing it?

Well, perhaps there are a couple of gbatemp staff who wants to do this. We can wait a couple of weeks and see if anyone is interested :)

Agreed.
I see this thing getting off the ground if some of these conditions are met. Just brainstorming.

  • One person on this site's staff agrees to manage a donation account. People are still a little weary of the decap disaster so we need someone "official" and trustworthy to handle finances. (bortz, prans, and Cyan are homebrew friendly people who might be able to help here)
  • The contest probably needs to not be sponsored by GBAtemp but needs to occur here for visibility. This is the trickiest part. :/
  • Someone needs to draw up rules, contest guidelines, a nice OP, etc obviously. These things have been done before, so just using a past contest as a template could work fine.
  • This doesn't have to be a huge endeavor. A small contest is fine. Raising just a few hundred bux should be easy.
  • Exploit bounties are a legally tricky area, but it simply requiring a video demo + writeup should be safe as opposed to requiring binaries and source as is typical for apps, emulators, and games (think 32c3). (we could just skip this category tbo, given the tidal wave of recent sploits)
  • Last but not least, if Smealum could just give the contest a mention to his 27K strong twitter army, I don't see how this couldn't achieve a good critical mass of publicity to get things rolling. I don't think he would be opposed given he's likely to win any such 3ds hb contest. :P

Yeah. Very nice ideas! A couple of things:

"The contest probably needs to not be sponsored by GBAtemp but needs to occur here for visibility. This is the trickiest part. :/"
- I don't understand why not?

I agree with the no exploit part.

Of course Smealum would promote this! After all, he encourage people to write more homebrew for the 3ds. And he won 2nd place in the 2011 contest.

Nice ideas, zoogie :)

Edit: I think it would be enough with two (or perhaps three) categories.
1. Games (ports, emulators, new original, anything),
2. Applications
3. ???

well it's in the works but we are just waiting for the right time scene wise.
I frequently ask several sceners for advice as to when would be the right time.
obviously recent developments are helping... feel free to keep on discussing and suggesting, we will study your ideas with attention

Ooh. Thanks for your answer!

I think zoogie has some really great ideas.

As for the judges. The 2011 competition had around 30 judges. I think that is a good amount of people. Then we can discuss how the judges will rate the homebrew. I can think about a couple of different solutions.

1. Each judge can give +1 point to each entry. No limits. If there will be 30 entry's each judge can give +1 to for example 3, 10 or 30 different entry's. Then we just add all points from all judges to get the final score.

2. All judges will be given the same amount of points that they can spend freely as they wish. If the judge have for example +10 points to spend, he can give +10 to one entry and then nothing else. Or give +6, +2 & +2 to three different entrys. Etc. Then add all judges points.

3. All judges can make their own top five list. Where the number one gets +5 points. Number two gets +4 points. Number three gets +3 points. Etc... Perhaps it could be better with an another point scale.. Where number one gets +10 points, number two +7 points, number three +5 points, number four +3 points and number five gets +1 point. Then add all points from all judges.

4. Any other smart solution...

This will be fun! :)

this could be good!
Now if only I was experienced enough with making homebrew to actually make something worth submitting...

Edit: perhaps a third category could be HANS patches/ROM hacks?

As for the right time... I think sometimes during this spring is the right time to have this competition. I have two arguments for this.

1. The 3ds scene is mature now. The only limits are the 3ds hardware and the skills of the developers. For example: MasterFeizz did a near perfect Quake 1 port 2-3 months ago. It took him two days. Imagine what that kind of talented developers could achieve if they spend a couple of weeks, or a month!

2. The competition has to be Before E3 June 14-16 imo. Nintendo will most likely announce NX, or some new hardware during this years E3. And when the new hardware is revealed. People will have very much focus on that.

So I would suggest that the deadline could be sometime in late April/May/or early June. But I could be wrong about this. Any other thoughts?

Any news for a 3DS homebrew competion? :)

Its been two months since last post here. NX is coming closer. The 3DS homebrew scene is probably peaking this year and fainting (or dying?) in 2017....

Ever heard of "Now or Never"?

Im actually thinking about setting up my own competion, I could donate 1000 Euros for the Winners (with my own category Award rules then, of course). But without gbatemp front page and backup, it wont happen...

Probably it would be best to talk directly to the higher ups of the temp about it. I'd just send them a pm, give good detail about your ideas and see what they say. I'd be down to contribute a bit of reward money. I wanna see some more RPGS! Or any homebrew really.

There doesn't seem to be much interest in this competition :/

These are the three categories I would like to see:
1. Homebrew game, original work
2. Game Port from any other platform
3. Application

If you are wondering about number 2. I would really like to see how far the 3DS can go. Push the limits! Read more about this here:

There can't be interest unless it exists.

Smilebasic recently had a contest and some nice software came out of it. That contest was completely unpaid too.

I'd love to try this out and practice some coding, but even if I couldn't commit, it'd still be fun to browse all the entires. A Homebrew Bounty for the 3DS would really begin to push the scene.
