Well we have to format anyways to unlink the nands, so you can do it now..
edit: i think i misunderstand, you wanna format when you have the black screen ?

That's true, but if done right your software carries over to emunand before you unlink as the nands share the same encryption.

Just to let everyone know, I downgraded my Japan new 3ds from 9.9 to 9.0 (9.1). Just removed the file and menuhax. Lastly I encourage EVERY SUCCESSFUL USER TO grab the .3dsx files for gateway and BACKUP YOUR NEWLY DOWNGRADED SYSTEM! You know, just in case your mom, sister, little kid, hamster upgrades you past a non downgrading point. Then all you need is a hard mod and not a new 3ds. but I already know there will be a few who "forget" so sell I tried..

N3ds is still iffy as far as I can tell. I would talk to someone that has successfully done it so they can walk you through it.

Safe more or less, but many (I mean MANY) people softbricked their console and had to update back to 10.3.

What does that mean?

So when your on 9.2 and create an emunand, it formats a partition on your sd for that nand. The emunand is an exact copy of the sysnand, therefor shares the same installed software, homebrew, games, etc. As well as some settings. When you unlink the nands, you format the sysnand. This seperates them and assigns a new encryption to sysnand. That long series of numbers in the extdata folders on your sd are a result of this encryption.
