31st December builds are broken for me.

I take that back, no builds seem to be running on my device. red screen launch hang.

(I keep a folder of known good builds on my 3DS as a sanity check)

Time to troubleshoot...

:(

edit: loading SMEA boot.3dsx a few times and now things are working. green screen launch OK.

very odd!

I'm considering to buy a n3DS *just to emulate SNES/GBA*, so I'm wondering how good the emulation is. Here and there I read it's perfect and every game is playable at 60fps, but I've also seen some people complaining about some game not running or the whole Retroarch core crashing...
So, how really is the emulation experience on n3DS? Should I buy a cheap Android console instead?

Are playlists working in RetroArch settings?

I have tried searching relevant comments regarding this
but have not found a clear answer for players that encounter this error even with a working ROM and Emulator. I am using GPSP latest version. I get this error, "cannot push NULL or empty core info into the playlist." etc.

Does this matter at all if I am able to play games normally? I placed my GBA Bios file into the core folder. Which I found just following the RetroArch guide.

I am unsure if there is a better more preferred BIOS at the moment?

I have a n3DS on 10.3 28-U running the latest Homebrew *hax 2.5 as well as the latest nightly build of Retroarch Emulation for SNES as well as GBA.

I think it really depends on the game I am running Minish Cap at 60fps and thats at a higher video filter Scale 2x so it can look better.
I have also ran Pokemon FireRed and it is working fine.

On the other hand, I think it also depends on the emulator that you are using.
Because when I use Retroarch emulation for SNES with EarthBound it works better and faster than other emulators out there like BlargSNES.
I haven't tried a variety of games just mainly the cookie cutter type.

Considering RetroArch for 3DS is still in the fairly early stages, it's simply not reliable, yet. If you want something now and are willing to spend a little bit of money, just buy a PSP. The homebrew and emulators for the PSP are well developed and polished.

Well I've been using the December 29th builds for NES, SNES and GBA/GB games in my N3DS and they are running quite neat. :)
Some FX heavy games for the SNES might run a little low on FPS but nothing outside of a playable state.

If it's GBA games you're talking about, then maybe you're right (it's very close now), but for SNES a N3DS is heaps better than the PSP. Also the screen resolution gives a 3DS the nod over the PSP in the first place... In fact, the only times I pull out my PSP now is if I want to play PS1 games. Or PSP games

Yeah, N3DSXL kills psp in every aspect of emulation. Besides ps1 obviously. I gave my psp to an friend. The PSP's buttons, screen and overall build quality is shit compared to the N3DSXL :)

After all these win95 on 3ds posts I decided to integrate dosbox.
It might not work at all, the port shutterbug used was based on an ancient version of the dosbox core.

**IF it works** It should work with simple DOS games like KEEN and JAZZ just fine
To use it, set input device to joystick (4buttons/4axes + kbd arrows) that allows you to use the dpad as kbd arrows to navigate the menus and you can use START/SELECT as ENTER/ESC, you should then be able to configure your joystick in the game.

I thought the N3DS's resolution was the same as the o3DS. As for SNES emulation, I only have a friend's N3DS to go off of, but it seemed the more recent fork of Snes9xTYL mecm was still better, though I don't know when the last time he updated his builds. Still, for now, I'd still recommend a PSP over a N3DS for emulation, at least until a stable build of RetroArch is released. The emulators for the PSP are tried and test, not to mention PSPs are only $40 right now. So you'd get something well tested and compatible for just a bit of cash. Now that's not considering other factors that may sway a consumer one way or another.

I think the N3DS will easily knock the PSP out of my top homebrew handheld of choice by the end of this year. RetroArch and plenty of other homebrew are progressing quickly and nicely.

For PS1/PSP alone, the PSP is still an awesome system. Don't let the Nintendo fanboys trick any of you into believing otherwise.

However, the screen is just too small to use 1:1 video mode for most emulators. Unless you're OK with stretched images or wonky up-scaling, you're better off getting an n3DS XL.

And from my own testing, it's SNES compatibility appears to be slightly better than the PSP's. For example, Yoshi's Island, Pilotwings, and Kirby Superstar all play full speed on the n3DS (PocketSNES), but are unplayable on the PSP.

Not sure about Pilotwings or Kirby Superstart, but I know Yoshi's Island runs fairly well on the more recent builds of Snes9xTYL mecm over on Wololo. Not saying that SNES emulation is better on the PSP, just that with those more recent builds, it's not that bad anymore.

Having tried both, I will say that the N3DS outperforms PSP on those games (though I can't say about Pilotwings either), and like LumInvader says the screen size on a N3DSXL makes a big difference too.

N3DSXL > PSP > N3DS (just! All about the screen size there!) >>>> O3DS
(my opinion anyway)

That said, the PSP does have emus for a couple of systems not on the 3DS, and like you say Retroarch isn't super stable yet either.... and PSP is dead cheap too like you say! You want both of em really! ;)

What's the framerate? I remember Yoshi's Island's fps dipping into the 30s-40s on level 1-1 with mecm -- totally unplayable for me.

However, even if the PSP were to achieve full speed SNES emulation, it still falls a ways short of the n3DS XL due to it's tiny screen size. Being better doesn't mean perfect, though. Right now Retroarch 3DS still has some pretty annoying issues that need to be addressed, for example:

- Some emulators treat .zips as folders, which means clicking a game requires you to navigate the .zip folder to select the game AGAIN
- Picodrive's 1:1 mode is broken (ugly gfx)
- Mednafen PCE Fast's 1:1 mode is also broken (ugly gfx)
- Changing an emulator setting changes that setting for EVERY emulator

Yoshi's Island is fullspeed on N3DS! :)
