So I bought a New 3ds xl from bestbuy. While there I checked the serial number, and checked this thread https://gbatemp.net/threads/n3ds-xl-firmware-by-version-number.381479/ . Sadly I did not see my serial number and asked the guy at the check out what the return policy was. He said that it expires in January. I came home to see it was 9.8 firmware. I was wondering if 9.2 firmware's are super rare. Because everytime I go to a store to attempt to buy a nintendo product all of them are in cases behind locked glass doors. So I would have to ask the guy to check everyone. I have no problem doing this seeing how badly I want a 9.2 version. Any advice?

PS: It's Black Friday in the USA tomorrow and the N3DS XL's are currently $180. I guess I shall attempt to go to Walmart/Target/Gamestop to check serial numbers and get the correct one.

Go to a place that is either a) an independently-owned store or b) a store that isn't dedicated to electronics and/or video games. A guy who owns his own shop is probably more affable, and a place that doesn't sell lots of consoles (but does have them) probably has older stock.

Alright thanks. Do you have any examples of a type of store that would have them, but most likely wouldn't sell many of them. Because recently when I broke my 2ds on 10.0 firmware, I went back to a target returned it and got one that was on 4.something. Should I maybe go back to that target or one like it?

Department stores. Macy's, Kohl's, Sears, Big Lots, etc. I would imagine people go to a Target for electronics more often than other department stores (except maybe Sears).

But wouldn't pawn shops have used consoles that people most likely have updated?

Alright I have checked the places you suggested and only sears had them, but sears only sells 3 diffrent bundles that come with games for $300. Which I am not looking forward to spending that much on.

Used Consoles? Yes
Updated? Ask to check the firmware before you buy, pawn shops usually let you test out stuff to see if it works before you buy anyways. Just ask to check the firmware and if its above 9.2 tell them you're not interested, its easier than going to gamestop, opening a box checking firmware then bringing it back and hoping to get a lower one...

Pretty much this. I went to a pawn shop a while back trying to find a 4.5 3DS to use with Gateware(this was like 2 years ago). And the guy had no issue with it. Pawn shops don't give a shit if you wanna hack the 3DS, you can pretty much tell them why you want to find a certain firmware. They just want to make money.

I used Google maps to find the nearest Pawn shop near my house. Get the phone number of the nearest one, and ask if they have any 3DSs.

Alright this guy on craigslist is selling a Majora's Mas Nintendo new 3ds xl. I don't think he's ever opened it, but I asked for the first 4 digits of the serial number. He's asking $255, yes I know it's a limited edition blah blah blah, but I offered $200. I hope he doesn't take it as an insult. I might be able to get it for like $220. Most people have stuff on craigslist and it doesn't sell for months so maybe he will think about it. All I know is that the Majoar's Mask new 3ds xl is supposed to be on 9.0.0-20U which is hackable. https://gbatemp.net/threads/n3ds-xl-firmware-by-version-number.381479/

What? They can? even on a FW above 9.2?

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------
Majora's Mask Edition assuming they didn't update it or if they left it in box. It would be 9.0.0-20U. But I guess maybe if they wanted your hacked one, and they updated their's.

BIG UPDATE WOOOOHOOOO: So I just returned the new 3ds xl to bestbuy, then went to target. The girl helped me at the case, and we flipped all of the boxes up so I could see the serial numbers. Then she locked the case and left. I browsed all of them in desperation and couldn't find any cideralla's to match my glass slipper. Atlast finally I saw 1 of the 7 3ds's that was a match. I rejoiced and celebrated. Bought the new 3ds xl powered it up, and boooooyaaaah 9.0.0.20U oh yeah. Cost $180. TIL: Not to be a pussy and just get the worker to help you see all the serial numbers.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Yeah, That's what I meant. I meant to trade my 9.0 to a latest firm MM LE :D. would that be reasonable?
Also probably not. People praise the hell out of a MM Edition, and most of the people that own them don't even play them. They simply bought them to flip them. The only person I could see having a used one would be some guy/girl that never knew about cfw's and just actually used it.
