Hacking On sysnand 4.5 - any point in updating to 9.2?

I've recently acquired the old regular 3DS with a 4.5 sysnand that I could use for cfw and hacks/homebrew of sorts. As far as I understand it, all the relevant functions are available on firmware up to 9.2, so is it a good reason to use a cartridge to "promote" the original firmware up? I suppose I could just keep 4.5 sysnand if there's no incentive to change anything, but I'm not so well informed about this.

Finally, I've been wondering about backing sysnand before I proceed with any further operations - would a backup of 4.5 be preferred to a 9.2 one - again, is there any practical difference?

Many thanks in advance.

If you update to 9.2 you can use themehax to autoboot in to custom firmware (such as rxtools), which I think is really convenient.

I think you might need Cubic Ninja though as i don't think you get the browser when updating via a cartridge. So you'd need some other way of installing themehax.

Please don't use a cartridge to update, it could screw you up badly if you don't have a compatible web browser.

The advantage of updating to 9.2 is that you can coldboot CFW with Menuhax.

The best way to update is to use rxTools Dev Mode + sysupdater.

Other than coldboot, you can get everything available in 4.5 and you can still use CFW offline with mset.

I do have a sky3ds on which I can store Cubic Ninja; would that help me at all?

So basically, in order to get sysnand 9.2 with the useful features, I need to start using RxTools on the current 4.5 sysnand first? Okay, guess I'll start reading up on that slowly...

It's great that you have Cubic Ninja, it makes things easier.

1)Set up Ninjhax 1.1 + PastaCFW
2)Install sysupdater into sysnand using FBI.3dsx
3)Get the update package in some iso website and place the updates folder into the root of your SD card.
4)Make sure firmlaunch is disabled.
5)Run PastaCFW and sysupdater.

That should get you to 9.2 as the easiest way.

Thanks, guess I'll be doing some research on every step.

What does firmlaunch do when not disabled by the way?

So the dangerous stuff starts at such an early stage eh.

Guess backing up sysnand is the way to start then. Which of the methods to perform the backup is the newest/most reliable one if you don't mind my asking? Or is there nothing to choose from in that area?

Actually upgrading your firmware is the only "dangerous" step, I put that between quotes because it's only dangerous if you screw up.

To do a NAND backup download Gateway's files, inside there is a launcher.dat, put it into the root of your SD card and go to go.gateway-3ds.com with your 3DS, it should freeze for a bit and then open a menu, there is an option to backup your NAND.

http://www.gateway3ds.com

Get the 3.4 or 3.4.1 don't use the 3.5 or 3.5.1 they are sure buggy as he'll.

Guess I should just make sure I understand what exactly needs to be done for each step and not make any errors.

I'm a little worried about going online... I heard something about the console automatically forcing the latest sysnand upon you if you do that? Or does being attentive and refusing each time work? I believe this went wrong for somebody when I was lurking for info (that I couldn't apply to practice at the time).

Downloaded the gateway files; I believe the English manual they have on the site also explains the process of backing up sysnand.

So, if anything goes wrong and the console bricks, as long as one has the sysnand backed up, they can restore it no problem without getting inside the hardware?

Don't worry about going online, this is no Wii U. It's not going to force you to update. Just don't put the system to sleep while being online.

And yes, in case something goes at worst case scenario that NAND backup Erik bring your 3DS back from the dead.

why not to use cart?
On 4.5 you don't need a web browser to launch hacks; on 9.2 you do. Cart updates do not contain web browser updates. Therefore if you don't have a high enough web browser to use hacks and you update with a cart, you will be locked out of hacks. If you update with devMode + sysupdater you will get the correct web browser update.

This has happened to me in the past. But if you've only updated to 9.2 I believe it's still possible to downgrade with the gateway launcher dat tool, which should be able to boot fine on the 6.x and probably 4.x browsers.

Isn't it possible to launch the Gateway exploit through Ocarina of Time 3D?
Granted, that would require you to have OoT3D and also have the exploit installed on it beforehand, but you wouldn't be entirely locked out. :P
With a compatible browser is definitely the easiest way, though, because it comes with the console itself and only requires an internet connection.

You can launch the gateway exploit through your browser just fine as it has 4.x and 6.x browser support I believe.
From there it's entirely possible to downgrade to a lower FW version with a lower mset.

but I saw somewhere that I can launch hacks on 9.2 with cart of CN, or I misunderstand something?
