Well, looks like Nintendo followed the same strategy for Youtube, when you try to access the browser and you haven't updated it will force you to update.

Happened to me and some other users. (I'm on 9.9)

More info:

Alright, let's consolidate what we know so far (make corrections if I'm wrong, please):

There is apparently a workaround (not for the gamecard dummy browser), but I cannot personally confirm that it works or not: http://gbatemp.net/threads/browserhax-is-still-working.400991/
  • This only affects users who have the 9.9 or higher browser. So if you updated to 9.9 or higher, or you installed a CIA of the 9.9 or higher browser, your browserhax is gone once you get the error.
  • The web browser on 9.9 and higher now phones home to cbvc.cdn.nintendo.net, and asks if the browser is up to date. If it's not, the browser disables itself completely.
  • Gamecards (physical retail games) that come with 9.9 now include a dummy browser update, which requires you to update the system online before being allowed to use it. This means that your browser will effectively be "bricked" until you update through System Settings.
  • Tubehax DNS (107.211.140.165) is now blocking this new URL. However, if you already have the update message, you will need to try the above workaround.
  • Non-dummy browser: entering recovery mode/safe mode with A+R+L+Up (dpad) will NOT remove the message.
  • Non-dummy browser: clearing the browser's save data and then blocking the URL) will change the update message to "The internet browser cannot be used at this time. Please try again later or in a different environment.", but will still not let you use the browser.
  • Non-dummy browser: performing a system update and blocking the URL (cbvc.cdn.nintendo.net) will still not allow access again, according to one report.
  • According to 3dbrew, if you use a proxy or DNS to block this URL before ever entering the browser and getting the update message, it will still work. http://3dbrew.org/wiki/Internet_Browser#Forced_system-update
Examples of gamecards that include 9.9:
  • Zelda Tri Force Heroes
  • Chibi Robo

It's also interesting to note that the dummy browser update from a gamecard does NOT update nVer, meaning that you'll never even know the browser was updated, unless you knew the browser version both before and after (or unless you dumped the ROM and looked at the update files).

Fix (only for New Nintendo 3DS) :

I noticed a lot of worry about browserhax being blocked. It's partly true BUT, there is away to make it work.
I am running an n3dsxl 9.9 and here is what I found with some experiments.
If I load the browser AFTER,say, 20 seconds or so (after booting my n3ds) it gives me the update message.
What I did is to put primary at 107.211.140.165 and secondary dns at 107.211.140.065.
Boot the browser as soon as your 3ds starts. VERY IMPORTANT.
There you go. Your browserhax should work.
I hope this helps.

RIP. Thank god I got themehax working. Running 9.9.

This was a pretty solid play by Nintendo. Waiting till a version that'll convince people to update to come out to patch a vulnerability and get people in the transition.

Imagine.

"In order to use Themes, you need to update to the latest system software."
"In order to play the Legend of Zelda: OoT, you need to update to the latest software."
"In order to go to the home menu, you must update to the latest software. Don't have the internet? Go f**k yourself."

F**k man. They're worse then Apple with their iOS patching and Applications that won't work with JBing (Most TV apps).

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.

@SylverReZ, atleast wiimmfii went fine although people only use it for Mario kart Wii
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
At least if they ban you for cheating, get another Wii. They're cheap as chips.

Remember when RiiShop was a thing?
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
    not really
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
It got shutdown because somebody "accidentally" leaked the database for the amount of people using the beta.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
RiiShop is the laziest way of downloading Wii games. Did somebody not think of this through?
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
although i ended up accidentally changing my nand with no way of going back bc i didn't know you needed a gamecube controller to restore it (i have a wii minus/1.1, which doesn't have gamecube controller support)
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@BakerMan, I think you're talking about the recovery mode that the SaveMii used, and also was to restore softbricked systems.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
If your NAND was hardbricked, then just buy another Wii. Or go with the dirty NAND flasher method.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
and if i find the sd card i have my NAND backed up on, i can not only restore the NAND if i solder the right part in, but i can also put my NAND on dolphin, then i can play dolphin online, like PMEX Remix or MKWii Riibalanced
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
    Brb
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@BakerMan, Oh yeah, that was a thing too. Dolphin does support Wiimmfi.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
yeah you just need to put your NAND backup with wiimmfi on it
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
ngl i feel like if a bunch of my friends have wiis and know how to get wiimmfi and back up their NAND, then we could do a PMEX Remix tournament
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
maybe even add UMVC3/DBFZ and make it a biathlon/triathlon
