Price isn't a huge factor, but obviously I'd rather spend $75 than $105. Which one would you recommend for modern gaming, like Black Ops III, BF4, GTA 5, and others?

Or, if you have a better choice for $100 other than these two that will outperform for tasks like gaming and 3d modelling, post that one. I don't need/want to have an integrated GPU, i have an r9 270x msi gaming 2gb crossfire.

Are there any APUs that provide competition to i7s?
Not by a long shot. CPU performance wise, the AMD high end APUs are weaker than AMD's mid-range performance line up. (ie the FX6000 series).
None of AMD's offerings, be it APUs or normal processors come close to the i7s.
Though for a single solution, the AMD's apus have the strongest graphics.

AMD's gonna revamp their whole product family in 2017 i think. Let's see what happens then...

Edit-
APUs weren't meant to be computational monsters. Just light gaming and HTPCs.
On the other hand, Intel has started the IRIS graphics lineups in i series too.
Its about a matter of time Intel beats AMD at every field. (Except dedicated graphics)
