Yeah the new 3dsthem.es website is going to have homebrew launcher custom themes in the future I think but untill then I want to make the experience of searching and downloading themes as best as I can with all of your help of course.

Honestly, it needs more work. I would say that is less of a custom theme and more of a simple wallpaper replacement, of which anyone could do themselves.

The issue with the majority of the themes so far in this thread is that they do not take readability and visual design into account - like in yours, the text on the top screen is absolutely unreadable. It's a mess and clashes drastically with the background. All you need is to take that area into account when designing and make it a lighter tone or add a box for the text to be displayed over.

As it stands, your theme currently drastically affects usability of the HBL and I personally wouldn't use it.

An example of an effective theme would be this one I found on neogaf (the user hasn't posted the source files sadly)

Further to this, if these themes are being added to the 3DS themes site, they need to be screened and held to an acceptable standard before being featured - not many of the themes in this thread so far would honestly be worth downloading and would actually bring the site and collection to a lower standard against those themes which are actually decent.

It amuses me how you have the nerve to say that me or anybody here didn't put effort into our themes? who the F do you think you are to make such a bold statement? If you look though all my themes they are not just pretty pictures, I worked every single theme and I made almost everything my own, yeah you would find the elements on google BUT you won't find them in the same composition so I suggest you that if you ain't buying you close your mouth and stop trying to put people down for the way do the stuff.

Honestly, I think the ability to choose a different font would go a LONG way in improving the readability of the text. It's really hard to get 1-2 pixel thick text to work on a variety of potential colors. If we could bold the text it'd improve drastically.

Getting my themes to the readability point they are now was hard, and I'm aware they suck.

But no, I've hurt your delicate ego by offering you ways to improve your theme. A person with a more adult attitude would take my post and say "right, thanks I'm now going to make my theme better.", exactly like what Masher does in terms of feedback with the HBL mod itself.

If you were selling a product in stores you sure as hell wouldn't respond to a customer (let's say, me) with a post like your response above unless you absolutely never want to sell another item.

I will say that the text of all the themes I've downloaded stands out a lot more on the actual 3DS than it does on my computer. Most themes still have shoddy text, but I don't think that's something many can fix without

A) Using color filters to dull the image
B) Using overlays that hide parts of the image where text might be
C) Picking text colors that break the theme

None of these are ideal. Most of the "slapped on wallpaper" themes have the potential to look a lot better once other readability features are added. I mentioned different fonts, but the ability to move the text areas or enable text highlighting would also go a long way.

I don't necessarily think people need to change their themes. It'd be better for everybody to use their themes shortcomings to suggest features to improve the HBL as a whole. I don't think any of the themes posted so far have been designed so poorly that they need core redesigns.

Why can't we all just have fun. We are all doing our best to make our own themes. Bashing them like that wont make them any better. I don't care if your some kind of graphic designer. You bashing someone's work and not giving any constrictive criticism won't help you or the person being bashed at. I personally love the theme and I can edit it the way I want. We not need quality checks as everyone should be able to upload anything that is appropriate. If you think making a theme is easy then you are wrong. I would love to see you make a starforce theme that lives up to your "quality standards."

Anyways it is 4am and I am tired so I will stop mashing on my keyboard.

New Launcher - Black Version. Comes in both 2 and 3 row version.

@mashers The problem with grid launcher right now is that it doesn't support custom icons for various buttons like settings folder, about, etc. As a workaround, I have made the icons a part of the background. The downside is that the icons do not go away when they're not available and they don't change based on the current menu. If you could support custom icons, that would greatly improve themes.

Another thing I've notice is that title, author, and description texts aren't vertically centered. Could you make it so that they are vertically centered? It would look drastically better.

Some of my thoughts about the comments above. Some themes look good, others not really. Taste is really a personal preference here. Even if you're not a graphic designer you should still know a thing or two about readability, it's common sense. When sharing themes just keep that in mind.
