I will be receiving my Gateway in a few days or so. I have also looked at all the videos and info I can, but cannot seem to find a straight answer to this.

Once you have all the software loaded up and your fully ready to play games... do you have to use the internet browser every time to play the games through the Gateway? If so... this would mean you have to have a wifi connection every time in order to use this. Is this correct?

Every time you turn on the console, you're in the original firmware without any patches running.
So you will need to boot into Gateway.
It's like that every time you power off and then power on the console again.

There's different ways to boot depending on model and firmware version.

O3DS 4.1-4.5 >> Profile exploit (offline and uses DS flashcart to install the exploit)
O3DS 4.5-9.2 >> Browser exploit (requires internet connection or a smartphone app; you can downgrade the firmware back to 4.x to use Profile exploit)
N3DS 8.1-9.2 >> Cubic Ninja or Ocarina of Time exploits (you need at least for the first time)
N3DS 8.1-9.2 (with downgraded Mset) >> Profiile exploit (you need to use CN or OoT at least the first time and then downgrade the Mset component)

So then you would need to have a wifi connection at all times to use the gateway? That kinda sucks if your out on the road.

Now, I do have cubic ninja, a 3DSxl with like 7.0 firmware. You mentioned I could get around having the above issues.

Basically your options with a O3DS with firmware 7.0 are the following:
>> if you have an Android phone, use the Android app to boot gateway (offline, requires tethering)
>> downgrade back to 4.x and use Profile exploit (offline)
>> Use a CFW like rxTools while you're on the road, they have ways to boot offline even without downgrading the firmware and emunand is compatible between GW and rxTools. Disadvantage is that you can only use CIA and not .3ds roms.
>> leave the console in standby while inside GW Mode. You won't have to boot into GW again but if you end up rebooting the console or going back to sysnand accidentally, you'll have no way to boot back again without having internet connection.

Aside from that, you'll need internet connection every time you want to boot into GW.

What is this option?

N3DS 8.1-9.2 >> Cubic Ninja or Ocarina of Time exploits (you need at least for the first time)

That's for N3DS (new Nintendo 3DS). It need a Cubic Ninja cartridge or a Ocarina of Time cartridge to boot GW the first time.

I have a new N3DSxl also, but it is on the most current firmware... so I know Gateway won't work.

What happens when that Gateway website goes down? All things do come to an end and eventually that site will too. Won't all the Gateway carts be useless at that point?

Nope. The files necessary can even be hosted in private servers. There's plenty of mirror that do the same as what GW's page does. So it's pointless to take down the page and even if that happens, they can easily create a new one again.

True I guess.

Since I am on 7.0 something... do you think it would be a good idea to downgrade the firmware to 4.x to be able to use the Profile Exploit? That way I do not need to have the internet at all to use the Gateway.

It depends. Since you probably already gave GW and games some use, by downgrading, the saves might not work anymore (different encryptions) and so I don't know if it's good for you. However if you never really played a lot with your games, then there's no problem with the saves.

It's just really that factor. Up to 5.0 there was one save encryption being used and starting on 6.x a different encryption was implemented and so saves created with the new one won't be compatible with lower firmware.

No saves at all for me. Basically I would be starting fresh. All new games that I have bought and yet to play.

Other than the save issue with downgrading... Is there any other downfall with downgrading?

Since I am not an fan of online play, I wouldn't have to worry about that. I am a single player only kinda person.

Nope. No other problem. If you didn't do anything at all yet, then that's the best possible outlook.

You can downgrade just fine and then you'll be able to use the Profile exploit which is offline.
All saves will work as well just fine since you never played before and it's all good.

Can you host a local website from the 3ds itself? Kind of like typing in a local file address on a PC will bring up the file? (ex "C:\\Program Files\etc\")

Or can you install RxTools and run Gateway from there?

Nope. No program available that can do that while outside some kind of patched mode (GW/CFW) and if you're already inside a patched mode, it wouldn't matter anymore. That's why you need a second party to host the files, like online in a website or offline in a server created in PC or smartphone.

And you also can't run Gateway after already running rxTools, I believe. The reverse is also true.

You mentioned that you could host the files on a server?

Could I put the required files on my own server for my own personal use with my Gateway? That way I will always know that I can use it no matter what.

Yes, you can. I think there was a guide on how to do it somewhere around here in the forums. You can try to search for it. I'll also try to check and if I find it, I'll post here.
