I know this is a stupid question, but I was wondering if there's anything I really want or actually need that I must hack my 3DS for that I can't get from an un-hacked 3DS. Like I don't need CFW and all that since I don't wanna install any new games.

I have the latest firmware, 9.8, have all of the games I want, etc. I just keep seeing more 3DS hacking posts all the time and even worried that hacking the system could brick it if I'm not careful. Plus people have been banned from Nintendo Network for using flash carts...

So, is there actually anything I must hack my 3DS for, which I really need to get for my system for an average gamer? Sorry if I'm wording this poorly, I'm tired.

...

only thing I can think of is homebrew. It's extremely satisfying to play snes games on a N3DS xl (it even has the snes style buttons :P). There's lots of other homebrew out there too ofc

plus you can do other nifty tweaks like giving your mii gold pants so it acts like a special event mii

I don't know if you need a hacked 3DS for it, but spider AR codes seem like a good reason. I'm not really keeping up with the scene, but I think you need a lower browser version to activate the codes which you can only do if you have a hacked 3DS. Cheats breathe new life into games you beat already.

3DS homebrew is starting to get traction. If you're interested in a portable emulation machine and don't have a PSP, I'd say go for it. You can also backup your own cartridges so you don't have to carry them around with you, if you prefer cartridges over Nintendo's digital distribution. Beyond that, there's really not much yet. Even then, chances are a cheap Android (even without service) can do everything, that's not gaming, better.

To OP:
You can play and install any game, including GBA. Emulate SNES, use cheats, get any DLC, hack the amount of playcoins you have, custom themes. There's alot of possibilities now.

Thanks. I was curious as to the benefits of 3DS hacking since I keep seeing new stuff.

Well I can play NES games on my R4i Gold 3DS cart, but don't do it often... I can use my Wii for that, and also make a gold pant Mii on my Wii and send it to my 3DS.

Interesting, but again, I hack some of my favorite Wii and DS games. :P

I'm more interested in game mods on my Wii since I can play the games on a big TV. In fact, I have almost all NSMBW game mods and haven't played lots of it yet.

Is the Wii hacking scene actually dead though? Lol.

You don't need a hacked 3DS for Spider AR codes. You just need a browser version lower than the one in 9.6. The key word is spider. Thats Nintendo's browser on the 3ds. You don't need hax to hack that.

Just get a sky3ds? I had the same question for myself, got both a gateway and sky3ds. Wasn't keen on the gateway as the other one is just easier to use.

What I meant was with sky you don't have to hack anything. The main thing for hacking will be home-brew and using cia

Well I have version 9.8 on my 3DS so it probably wouldn't work, and fair point about you don't have to hack anything using the Sky3DS...

But hacking the 3DS or using a flash cart (Except I use a R4i Gold 3DS in DS Mode and works great on the latest firmware, surprised it's not blocked by Nintendo) might not be much of an interest for me...

Your choice really. With 9.8 you will have to wait for gateway to update their exploits (if they ever do). Personally I have both cards, sky3ds works well, gateway is a bit fiddly. Mostly depends what, if any, rooms you want to play and if you are interested in home-brew stuff

Good to know.

I just use the R4i Gold 3DS since you can't download DS Games through the eShop or whatnot, and since the 3DS takes one cartridge at a time it's better to have it play multiple games at once without swapping cartridges, and there's a lot of great DS Games.

I can play some customs while I'm not at home too.

:P
