Basically this is the situation

I have retail carts for pokémon X and pokémon alpha sapphire which I want to play on my gateway as .3DZs rather than carrying several carts around

I dumped them using the gateway's game dumping feature and since they're card 2 the saves should be included

When I launch them I get a "this save file is corrupt" error

I suspect this is because I started them on a 9.X sysnand console and, if I'm not mistaken, Gateway mode for some god forsaken reason still uses 4.X save encryption

So is there any way to make it work? Any way to convert my 6.X+ saves back down to 4.X?

PS. sorry for the flood of threads about save files lately. the way it is on the 3DS is... really confusing.

It's possible, easiest method would be to upgrade to 9.0-9.2 and use the browser exploit.

What are you talking about? He's using Gateway so it's safe to assume he's <= 9.2, if he updates to 9.4 he would lose Gateway. (Not to mention that doesn't answer his question).

Yeah, the save won't work since the save was done on a >6.x console, so Gateway won't recognize it. You can either extract the decrypted save using PowerSaves, or you could install a legit cia of Pokemon X (so the cia can be read in classic mode), then enter classic mode and use Save Data Transfer Tool to move the save from the retail game to the legit cia, and then, back in Gateway mode, use SaveDataFiler to extract the save from the cia and inject it to the .3dz rom.

Whoops. Bad typo. Meant 9.0-9.2. Fixed it :P

And it does answer his question. If he updates to 9.x and uses browser exploit he can use his 3dz dump like normal without worrying about having to convert the saves.

Since I have the same problem as the OP that would totally help me if it worked. Before I try it myself I'd like to know why a Pokemon X cia save works both on classic as well as gateway mode. Are cia save files not 6.x encrypted?

No, gateway mode use the old save encryption, regardless your sysnand version.

Not sure why but they are not, CIA saves works for both of the keyY encryption methods. (Hence why you get to keep your digital games' saves when you downgrade sysnand to 4.x).

He isn't correct though. He thinks that the new encryption doesn't work in Gateway at all when it does. If your game started with old encryption it will stay with old encryption. Quickest way to fix that is to export with SDF and re-import. It uses the newer keys by default.

now a days you can pretty much transfer your save back and forth between cia/3ds/3dz in any direction, i just finished transferring all my retail carts card 2 games included to 3dz and cia format saves. but it will require NTR, cubic ninja or LOZ OOT, and a lot of patience.
this guide was for smash bros but it works for most games

SaveData transfer guide

More info on saves

No, you are wrong. Just try this :
- Start a 6.X+ game rom on 6.X+ console, then tranfer the save to a 4.X+ console : it still works.
- Start any pokemon game retail cartdrige on a 6.X+ console, dump the game and run the backup on the same console : save corrupted.

1) No, it doesn't.
2) Yes, it does.

I'm not even sure why this is an argument. This was confirmed months ago when the 9.x browser exploit was released on o3ds.

1) So how do you explain that the pokemon and the ssb save I made on my 4.X old3ds still work on my n3ds?
2) Did you event try? I made a backup of my pokemon x on my 9.2 console when gateway ultra came out (played on the same console, so the save is 6.X encrypted), put the rom on the gateway red card : save corrupted. I even tried again just now on my n3ds just to be sure, it still doesn't work.

Just try it, you will see by yourself I'm right.

1) he is right, I tried it, it didnt work. and you said you transfered from 4.x to 9.x which WILL work, the opposite will not, because the save files can be updated from the old encryption to the new encryption, but the new encription was finalized, meaning it cant be converted back to 4.x encryption, and 4.x consoles cant read it, so they say its corrupt and delete the save.

I just tried with my pokemon x backup :
- Started a game on my n3ds (9.0) and saved
- Put the red card on my 4.X old3ds
The save is still recognized.
Are you sure you used the same header and didn't change the extension?

Something is funky with your setup. You should NOT be able to save and go back. You could easily test this in classic mode with a real cartridge. Blank out the save on the cart. Save within 9.x. Take your retail card and plug into your 4.x old 3ds and boot classic mode and load the cart. It will say corrupted.

I am talking about roms saves in gateway mode, not classic mode, reread my post.
Again :
- Gateway mode use the old encryption for all games, regardless your sysnand/emunand version
- In classic mode, it depends of the game and your sysnand version.
