Stumbling around on Reddit I found that someone claims to have found the files for Mother 3 in the latest Smash Bros Update. I doubt the validity but I was wondering if anyone around here can try to replicate what he found in the files.

Here is the source

I can't replicate it, but it seems pretty likely, seeing as Lucas is a confirmed character.

No I understand that Lucas is coming out, but to claim that Mother 3 is getting released sometime this June sounds a little preposterous. Even the game is in the wrong category for the masterpieces. It shouldn't be in the 1992-1996 range?

Oh, hmm, I didn't read what you linked to. That does seem fairly odd...

The only thing coming out in June is Mother 4

I don't know about the NTSC release, but the PAL release of Smash Bros. says Earthbound was released on the date it came out on the Virtual Console here, seeing as that was the first time it was released in PAL regions. I don't know the specific date, but yeah, it said 2013.

Yeah, I don't buy it. Smash Bros. Brawl had a ton of Mother 3 info and references, a lot of the time outright spoiling the game for those who haven't played it, but Mother 3 itself never got a release here. I'd like for it to happen, but if Nintendo does release any of the other Mother games in the US, I'll be surprised. We'll see come June, but it just seems unlikely.

EDIT: Looking at the image, I find it funny how Kirby's hand obscures part of the Mother 3 image and yet the rest of the characters are confined within their respective game images. Then again, that could just be because Kirby Super Star is selected. I don't know, I don't have Smash Wii U.

Right now, I'm thinking it's legit.

Things to note:

-Throughout the development of Smash Bros., characters tended to be confirmed as part of the roster to coincide with the release of an associated game. Lucas coming back to Smash while Mother 3 releases for the first time in most of the world would be no coincidence if this were true.
-Nintendo released Earthbound for the first time in Europe in 2013 through the Virtual Console, indicating that Nintendo is aware of the interest in the series.
-When Smash Bros. was released, the European version listed Earthbound's release date as the day it appeared on Virtual Console, as it was the first time it appeared in that region. If Mother 3 were to be released worldwide, and it gets added to Smash Bros. as part of the Lucas DLC, that date would indeed be consistent. Except in Japan.
-As Mother 3 would be a Virtual Console release, I don't think it's too sudden an announcement. N64 games came to Virtual Console the day they were announced. I would expect the next Nintendo Direct, or possibly even sometime during E3 for an official announcement regarding Mother 3.

If it's fake, it's a very impressive fake. The guy did his homework.

The real question is, which will happen first: Mother 3 in US, or Half-Life 3 Everywhere?

I don't think MOTHER 3 should have to be released on VC by Nintendo when there's a perfectly fine fan translation. (Patch right here.)
I honestly think people need to stop getting pissed at Nintendo for not localizing MOTHER 3 and releasing it outside of Japan.

No problem at all with Nintendo releasing it as VC.

It increases the places you can play the game AND makes it way easier to do so, more people will play it.... I can even think about more advantages, but I hardly can think of disadvantages.

Why not ? Even if it happens (with the "if" in massive airquotes), nobody's forcing you to get it.

If Nintendo did release it on Virtual Console, I would buy it, but I'm tired of hearing other fans act like Nintendo HAS to localize it.

If you're tired, fine. But I also think that it's their obligation to keep the franchises that they use nowadays relevant.

They still reference the Mother franchise to this day (aka. Smash Bros). So, not re-releasing games or working on new ones for the franchise is plain laziness and a refuse of the obvious.

They understood this idea with the DK franchise, so no reason for them to ignore this principle with the others.

I heard the creator of the mother series was against releasing Earthbound on the virtual console overseas because they would need to replace some things to avoid copyright infringement so I can see him been against to releasing mother 3 overseas too.
