I unlinked my sys- and emuNAND by formatting the sysNAND, if that is relevant. This means my emuNAND now contains the original NAND (except updated to the latest firmware).

Yes, this is the NNID i had originally connected my system with. I know this because in emuNAND it still knows that's my NNID and, as I said above, emuNAND contain my original NAND. This means that, before the unlinking, NNID was connected to sysNAND. I have successfully downloaded eShop titles with it before.
do you have your 8.1 nand.bin? Have you considered going back and restarting the whole GW process?

Yes, I made sure to make plenty of backups. It's something I have considered (since hey, I don't have much to lose at this point anyway), but figured I'd see if any other options came my way (because I've been too busy these past few days to do it all over again). Think I should kick off the weekend by giving that a shot?

Say I put everything back to how it was before the Gateway process. Original sysNAND, original SD contents, etc. What if I still get the same "must update" message in NNID? Would that be a dead end?
EDIT: Can't find out until we try. I'll be resetting everything to pre-GW now, reporting back with relevant updates as they come.

Hi guys, I'm on 4.5 with R4i 3DS Deluxe and I've lately installed the 9.4 emunand using MT card launcher. Now everything is fine except that Yoshi's New Island save has been erased. I had a backup and I restored it but nothing; when I started the game it asked me again if I wanted the spotpass thing and the save still wasn't there. It didn't occur with other games for what I've seen. Does anyone know if it caused by the emunand and, if so, what other games might have been affected?

Is it normal for the activity log to suddenly say Play Time: 9999:00 for System Settings, Internet Browser, and Nintendo Network ID?
Play Time shows Nintendo Network ID being played constantly.

Wait a second... I was under the impression Gateway's launcher also had "restore system nand" functionality. It doesn't. (That's what all the buzz with hardware modding is for, doh.)
So I now have a sysNAND that can't connect to NNID because it requires me to update, and an emuNAND that has my NNID connected to it, but gives me "an error has occurred" when accessing an NNID service. (As demonstrated in the video I posted.)
What is the process for "restarting the whole GW process" here? I want to keep all my Streetpass, Mii Plaza etc. data on my emuNAND (as it is right now), since that's what my original system was. I am correct in saying that's partially tied to the NAND, right?
(Also does Nintendo's "NNID can only be linked to 1 3DS at a time" policy apply to sys- and emuNAND, ie, do different NANDs count as different systems?)

Restore systen NAND function is used when you enter the downgrade option while pressing Up

I keep forgetting about these things I've read ten times over already. Sorry for the trouble folks.

UPDATE: Restored sysNAND to its original. NNID is linked to it, but tells me a system update is required for online services. emuNAND still gives me the same "an error has occurred" message.
Guess I'm outta luck here?
UPDATE 2: Just realized there's really no need for me to have a working NNID anyway, since online games (apparently) don't require it (or at least they work fine on my current emuNAND) and I have no use for the eShop since I can now install everything through CIAs anyway. I'm an idiot. Thanks for the guidance y'all.

True but eshop is certainly more convenient for game updates. Instead of trying to set up your NNID try just accessing the eshop through emunand and downloading some updates. That's what I did and it had set up my NNID for me.

Anyone know if the Gateway blue card supports 32GB micro SDHC cards?

Edit: For loading nds roms of course.
No clue as I have never had a chance to use it. It should but there were some older DS flashcarts that only supported smaller sizes. That's a whole lot of DS roms, my r4 has an 8GB and I think that is over a 100 games.

I have a question, I recently imported the "new" 3DS from Japan (came with 8.1 Firmware). I am aware that Gateway isn't compatible with N3DS yet but something's been bugging me. The new version of Gateway requires you go to the web browser to boot it. I wanted to see the new web browser on my N3DS , but it won't let me use it, it says I need to update. Will this update it to 9.4?

Question!
i just got my gateway 3ds and i set up everything, emunand and reverted back to 4.5.
i made back ups of my sysnand and my emunand.
howerver i realise i have another sd card which is 16gb and a class 10.
which is far better than my 4gb class 4 sd card that i used for the set up until now.
is there a way to transfer everything to this new sd card safely?

Doesn't updating through eShop fail for games you didn't actually purchase?
And accessing the eShop on emuNAND gives me the same old "an error has occurred" message. Eh, whatevs.

So I just got a 3DS with the newest firmware and the flashcart situation looks like a total mess.
This is the most networked DS product I have ever seen, I feel like it is always nagging me to go on line.
The eShop seems just EVIL: higher prices than carts and there's no way to resell a game you thought was brilliant at first but got bored of.

Would it be correct to say that there is NO PLUG-N-PLAY flashcart (hereafter FC) to play 3ds games?

i.e. every FC requires the user to jump through weird hoops:
Gateway MESS:
  • does it all but far from PNP
  • Expensive cart: cost of 1 GW = 3-4 used GOOD 3DS games
  • Risky firmware downgrade required to <4.5
  • Require 2 carts, one to enter DS mode and do some exploit, another to play 3ds games.
  • OR visit some dodgy Asian website to load exploit.
  • MUST RERUN EXPLOIT after every REBOOT?!
  • Little or no resale value, can't sell on eBay
Sky MESS
  • convenient but severely limited: region locked; no homebrew; no backups; just 3DS games
  • Expensive cart: cost of 1 Sky = 4-5 used GOOD 3DS games
  • Windows app. required to funky format your sd card
  • what if the button breaks? Judging by the crap build quality I have seen in DS FCs, I'm expecting flimsy junk.
  • Little or no resale value, can't sell on eBay

3DS games are not cheap and I would like to be able to back them up and leave the originals at home. Sounds like the only way to achieve this is with BOTH GW and Sky: use GW to make backups and sky3ds to conveniently access them.

Conclusion: Either cart is just too expensive.... Wait longer until the FCs mature or Nintendo kills them all.

Or have I missed something?

Security's tight after the NDS/Wii mess.
I highly doubt there will be a true "Plug&Play" any time, especially for cheap or even free.
But Gateway isn't so bad, after you setup everything and downgrade (for offline), you simply have to:
  1. Boot up your 3DS
  2. Go in settings and choose the DS profile setting
  3. Once the emuNAND loads, press select
  4. Select your ROM and enjoy
Heck, you don't even need to use the Gateway Multi-ROM menu, you can install the games on the home menu.

It's a pity that things are this way: Nintendo "security" is making me not want to ever buy anything from them. Come to think of it, almost every N-product I own is flea market or eBay anyway. Well, that's a tradition I won't be changing anytime soon...

It sounds like GW is almost a real custom firmware, like the PSP1/2/3000/Go have; I have seen videos on youtube that it can be used w/o a cart to downgrade.

Speaking of cfw, is ninjhax still alive? Cubic Ninja prices are low on eBay and it looks like most of the homebrew hasn't been updated in a while.

Not knocking you for buying used as the vast majority of my WII u games are used but if all you buy is used Nintendo really doesn't really give a shit about you.

Yeah I agree with you. With GPS and all my side business of jacking cars is getting pretty rough as well and I am considering giving it up.
i have a bunch of .cia games installed right now
if i link my NNID, will they go poof?

I only have a few cia and none have gone poof. I hear it is a problem with DLC. If you have dlc then a solution is to have a second emunand that you access the eshop with and then copy it over to your working emunand.

Yes it will update your firmware to 9.4. Just wait and see what solution GW has.

Can I play eShop roms on the R4i3DS? If so, how please? Also, till what most recent games can I play on the R4i3DS? Thanks!
That is not enough information to determin what card you have. Is it the Deluxe gateway clone? Or a standard DS flashcart?
