(you can update to 4.5 using a game update pretty easily)

note: cfw is buggy and hardly worth using, if you have a gateway anyway - why bother?

That's ultra easy !
Just backup any retail card with the gateway menu. Then download Gateway rom patcher. Open the retail card dump and save the header in a separate file. Then open your other rom and inject the header file. If the patcher wants to change the CHIP ID, say yes and don't forget to re copy-paste the Card ID in the custom header menu of the patcher (little bug).

Can you explain what this does/the reason for doing this? I'm new to all this and want to backup my physical collection of 3DS games

I am trying now and it says Fatal Error, you need to backup your sysnand first.
But i have already done that and i have a copy in my pc already

Hold UP on the DPAD before you hit A on the Downgrade menu option and it restores the backup.

Put the nand backup back on your sd card, problem solved.

Perhaps it's a precaution forced by the team, it checks for a NAND dump on the SD card.
