I currently have a 3ds XL that is upgraded to the most recent System Version. I have been considering buying a second unit to use just for Gateway but is that necessary with the Firmware Spoofing that Gateway offers? From what I have read, it seems that having two consoles might not be necessary because of the Firmware Spoofing.

The major games that I play on my 3ds are Pokemon and Smash Bros. I do use the Pokemon Bank as well.

A big thank you in advance for taking some time to help me.

firmware spoofing means, that you can play games requiring higher firmware on lower firmwares, so a 4.5 3ds can play higher firmware games using a gateway
you said, that your xl is on latest firmware, so firmware spoofing doesn't affect you, because you can't even use a gateway
gateway and all other flashcards only work on 4.x firmwares

Sorry, I didn't really make my post as clear as I should have, but thank you for the quick response.

I am planning to buy a 4.x 3DS for Gateway, but after I do, is there any benefit to holding on to my current 3DS as well?

well any games released after 6.x that you currently have saves for, you will not be able to continue using your saves on those games.....so if you have any saves on say pokemon or smash bros you might want to keep hold of your current 3ds for those, but really imho having a second 3ds is a bit unessisary, unless you have a partner or something and you can say its "theirs" :P

Except the warm fuzzy feeling of having your old battle-scarred bro 3DS collecting dust in a drawer somewhere, there are no benefits. Gateway team may perish someday/Nintendo can win the battle, rendering GW useless in newer firmwares, but you’ll still be able to play everything that is already released. And if GW comes to an end and you’ll beat ≈1000 games released so far and would like to have more, you’ll just update your console.

or you could also consider getting it hard modded so you can upgrade and downgrade whenever you like, so if it ever does come to a point where gateway is getting no more support you can still play newer games and downgrade when you want to use the gateway again

I still have my updated 3DS and am glad I do. Between 6.x save encryption not working on Gateway, and the occasional firmware update that breaks Gateway compatibility requiring to wait for an update to play new games, I wouldn't want to be stuck with only a 4.x 3DS.

Man, sucks for you. No backup loading or Homebrew sounds like a 3DS I do not want to experience.

i think he means he has both....but i wouldn't say hanging onto a second console for the occasional loss of eshop support and for games which could really just be restarted if you want to still play them,

i would rather pocket the money while its still worth a fair bit and use the proceeds to get my console hard modded (except i can do that myself so that wouldn't really in my case)

Yup. I actually have 3 but I've been meaning to get rid of the non-XL.
Having to restart a game I have gotten far on puts me off playing it so that's not really an option for me.
