Nintendo’s beloved series The Legend of Zelda celebrates it’s 27th anniversary release of the original game in North America today. The game technically celebrated it”s 28th Anniversary earlier this year, as the original Zelda came out in February of 86 on the Famicom system in Japan, but August 22nd was the first day American gamers were finally able to get their hands on this timeless gaming classic, and history was most certainly made.
The series has seen 17 major releases (with several remakes and spin-offs), on over a dozen video game systems, with sales figures of over 50 million sold across the span of it’s whole life. Ocarina of Time still holds the record for highest rated game of all time on Metacritic, successfully maintaining the top spot since the site’s earliest moments of aggregating game scores (14 years running now), beating out the likes of gaming giants such as Super Mario Bros, Street Fighter II, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2, Halo 1 and Grand Theft Auto 3.
