By special edition I mean that the housing of the 3DS XL has a design on it rather than a plain solid color. Firmware 4.5 or lower.

Me and my friend have Mario Kart XLs. It has no special design, it's just blue and comes with Mario Kart 7 preloaded. Was on 4.1 or 4.2 when we got them.

It's not third party. Its legit. At the very least the quality is indistinguishable from original.

Thanks, but it seems tedious to apply & the majority offered are plain colors ( http://i.imgur.com/pWZbd01.png ).
I just want a list of original in-box 3DS XL handhelds.
I guess only three have unique designed shells with 4.5 or lower firmwares.
I was hoping for more.

It's not really tedious, but its up to you I guess.

BUT once you swap the top and bottom faceplate, your 3DS XL would be exactly like the Japan-only limited edition mario red.

Woah there. You're looking for a 3DS XL that is limited edition and <4.5. I'm suggesting an alternative method that you can do so. I did not say that there are other alternate limited edition shells other than mario red.

You could always buy an LE, swap the shell, and then resell it. Loss would probably be a similar price to buying a housing, and you could get a digital game. /shrug

At any rate, suggesting google search implies that there is more than mario red which can be found via searching. Not to mention its rude in general to mask a url which links to google.

I recently purchased and installed that exact Red limited edition shell (Just top and bottom parts) onto my silver Australian Console. The quality is nothing short of amazing. Completely indistinguishable from the original shell quality wise.
