4chan recently added support for the .webm format as an alternative to the .gif.

AlertSpicyBlueandgoldmackaw.gif

(4.5MB)

vs.

http://zippy.gfycat.com/AlertSpicyBlueandgoldmackaw.mp4

(286k)

Yes that's a 4.5MB gif compressed to 286k.

http://i.4cdn.org/sp/src/1396801253296.webm
(a 14 second 1280x720 video at under 2MB.)

http://a.pomf.se/mwsxza.webm
(60FPS Bayonetta footage at about 2MB.)

Q. But, but, what if someone uses a huge one with audio and kills the site!!!

Just do what they did.
We decided to disallow WebM files with sound for a few reasons, but mainly because it’s our intention to provide the site with better animated images, and not true video support. To that end, we only accept WebM files with one video stream and no audio streams, that are shorter than 120 seconds long, no larger than 2048x2048 pixels, and less than 3 MB in size.

Q. Well uh, where do I upload it? YOU GOING TO PRESSURE ME TO DONATE MORE TO COVER BANDWIDTH COSTS?

http://gfycat.com/

Q. IT'LL TAKE YEARS, HUNDREDS OF TECHNICAL EXPERTS AND LOADS OF MONEY TO IMPLEMENT IT.

https://boards.4chan.org/g/res/41212767

I'm no technical genius but this makes it look simple enough to implement.

Q. But who really cares?

This applies to everyone that posts gifs. And it does mean that FAST6191 won't be as mad when I post these huge dial-up killing gifs.

Webm is not a successor to GIF though. Like 4chan have said (although partially correct), it is a video/audio container file designed to contain Google-sponsored codecs.

There really isn't a successor for GIF. Closest one are APNG and MNG, both saw very limited adoption.

GIFs don't have any kind of interface to pause/play them. The Webm videos however do. (at least that's how they are showing up in Firefox for me).

I would have no issue having this being embeddable in a manner similar to YouTube videos. However allowing it to be imbedded in the sig area? HELLLLLLL NNOOOOO!!

As for APNGs....Does the IMG BBCode support them? I'm curious as to what browsers currently can view them out of the box. :P

Turns out APNGs usually end up with much larger file sizes then GIFs.....It's 2014 why the *** isn't there a decent replacement to the GIF standard? 256 color 1-bit alpha is freak-en ancient now. :(

There's MNG files which are a more complicated version of APNG, but none of the major browsers support it yet. (Firefox/IE8 won't recognize them at all) and it still results in larger file sizes.

There's HTML5 stuff, but in many cases websites need additional upgrades to support it like iFrames or javascript. Not something many forums would allow their users to use in posts.

What we need is a straight up replacement image format that can support better alpha and compression similar to JPGs and it would be the ultimate replacement. We can go crazy with long ass animations in are sigs and not bust the file size limits or lag browsers. :P

PNG and APNG usually have many metadata bundled in them. Using software such as pngcrush will strip that data away, shrinking file size.

Also keep in mind that PNG is lossless image file. No image degradation from source. VP8 and VP9 used in webm and JPEG are using lossy compression; quality drops from source. They achieve much smaller file size because you give up on quality.

Yeah! Let's encourage swathes of animated images! Wait a second... what I meant to say was NO.
This doesn't encourage posting animated images any more than allowing people to post '.gif' image files or Youtube videos do. All it does is allow the people that do post animated images in certain threads a way to do so that provides better quality and is less of a nuisance to everyone else thanks to the greatly reduced file size.

Temp isn't 4chan.

Image reactions are annoying when their posted in normal threads.
they usually add nothing to the topic.

I can see a bright side of it being helpful when people got problems but then again.
I see more flamewars being started cause of it.

They're essentially videos, they aren't going to replace reaction gifs anytime soon.

Well the only upside of it is that you have to manually click to play them.
But as soon as enough reaction images are made in webm, they will be used to flame people.

GIFs can be used to flame too, and they're larger, causing more harm than webms.

As you may or may not noticed, GBATemp isn't an image board. By extension, it does not have advanced image/video embedding options, just the bare minimum required for the boards to work. While I don't necessarily like the motivation behind adding webm support, I do have to say that it would be useful for the sake of embedding such content in news articles and frontpage posts. That being said I also realize that it would require finding and appropriating a xenforo extention capable of such embeds... which can be more challenging than you'd think. It's worth considering, but for all the different reasons.
